📍 Paleokastritsa
The most famous tourist resort of Corfu, Paleokastritsa, enchants the visitor with its natural beauty. Here, the crystal clear waters are combined with a breathtaking green landscape.
It is impossible to go to Corfu and not take a dip in the crystal clear and cool waters of the famous Paleokastritsa, which is located in the northwestern part of the island, 25 km from the city of Corfu. This coastal village is one of the most beautiful and most photographed spots on the island. The impressive natural landscape, dense vegetation and a series of wonderful beaches with crystal clear waters separated by small headlands make swimming there a unique experience.
The enchanting coves of Paleokastritsa
The beaches of Paleokastritsa have sand and pebbles, crystal clear blue-green waters (but quite cold even on the hottest days) and a backdrop of the impressive, green landscape of the area. First you will come across the organized beach of Agia Triada. At the end of Paleokastritsa, below the monastery, is the most famous beach of the area, that of Agios Spyridon. Both beaches offer water sports and diving lessons for the adventurous.
There are also smaller coves for swimming, such as Alypa, Agios Petros, Ampelaki and Platakia. Shortly after entering the village, there is the enchanting La Grotta cove with the bar of the same name (La Grotta). Descend the 142 stone steps to dive off the rocks into the crystal clear waters. To see the hidden beauties of the area, we suggest you rent a boat and explore the beaches that are only accessible from the sea (such as Chomi or Paradise beach) to enjoy the sun and the sea away from the crowds.
The impressive sea caves
Don't miss the opportunity to take a boat ride to the wonderful sea caves located in the area. Each cave has its own story. The most famous of them is the cave of Nausicaa. The sun's rays as they reflect on the rocks and the deep, crystal clear waters will surely wake you up for a cool dip.
Visit the historic Monastery of Paleokastritsa
After the dives, take a walk to the hilltop Monastery of Paleokastritsa. It was built in 1228, however its current buildings date back to the 18th century. You will be impressed by the wonderful view of the sea from many parts of the monastery, the paved courtyard with the wide arches and the bougainvilleas, but also the small museum which, apart from relics and icons, also houses the bones of a sea whale.
The picturesque Lacones with the wonderful view
Lakones is one of the most beautiful traditional villages of Corfu. Built on the green hillside above Paleokastritsa, this village has many old houses and narrow streets, and owes its fame to the excellent view it offers to the creeks in the area. The best place to enjoy this view is the Bella Vista site, on the way to the Fountain.
Sunset in Angelokastro
Near Lacones, you can also see Angelokastro, the ruined Byzantine fortress on the steep top of a hill. In this once impregnable fortress, with its important strategic position, it is said that 3,000 inhabitants of the surrounding villages, chased by the Turks, found refuge in 1537. At the top of its citadel is the chapel of Archangel Michael. Take a breather and climb up for the amazing view and one of the best sunsets you will see in Corfu.
