📚Myself and Other Animals is a new book mosaicked from unpublished autobiographies, uncollected pieces and previously published extracts from Durrell’s work and archives. The result is an extraordinary journey through Durrell’s life in his own words, edited and introduced by his widow Lee Durrell.

📚Drawing on a memoir that Durrell started writing before he became too ill to continue it, and an unfinished book from a trip to Australia in 1969 to the Great Barrier Reef, Northern Territory and Queensland, here is the unvarnished story of Durrell’s life, from touching family tributes to golden bats and pink pigeons.

💦 The history behind our beloved TV series - Part 2
.. Gerald began to collect and keep local wildlife as pets, spurring a life-long interest in nature and conservation. He was home-schooled and allowed to run wild. The young boy also found a friend and mentor in the Greek doctor, scientist, poet and philosopher Theodore Stephanides.

The two explored the island together, accompanied by Theodore's young daughter Alexia (who doesn't appear in the series).

Though Larry and his wife initially lived with the whole family at their house at Kontokali, in early 1936 the young couple moved to a tiny fishing village on their own. Larry later struck up a friendship with the writer Henry Miller, who came to visit in 1939...

🐚 The history behind our beloved TV series!!!

Louisa Durrell, her husband and their four kids were all born in India during the British Raj. Travelling engineer Mr Durrell died in 1928, so Louisa took the three youngest (Leslie, Margo and Gerald) to England where they tried to get by on a widow's pension. Eldest son Lawrence had already been sent to a boarding school in England to be educated, something he definitely wasn't happy about.

By 1935 Lawrence was living in Corfu with his first wife Nancy (although in the TV series Larry is single and unmarried). That was the year his mother, sister and brothers arrived to join him on the island.....

Nothing better than the enduring joy of the book about a bohemian family when you have never been part of one yourself.

When we are talking about "My family & other animals" by G.D., fun turns out to be an understatement!!!

🌺 Historical Walking tour “The Durrells in Town”

Our tour of Corfu begins at the Durrells spot at the center of Corfu.

We will make a quick at the Town Hall square with the theatre of San Giacomo, a Baroque Renaissance building of the early 18th century.

Next on the list is the Esplanade square, home to the most important monuments of Corfu town.

The Liston buildings surrounding it are decorated with French arcades making the place reminiscent of Rue De Rivoli in Paris.

Close to it we find the Old Byzantine Fortress of Corfu, that was built in the 6th cent ΑD and it was reinforced in the years of Venetian rule. The citadel of Corfu stood between the imposing rocks of the promotory and for many centuries the fortress protected Corfu from pirate attacks.

The Boschetto garden next to the fortress is dedicated to the famed authors Lawrence and Gerald Durrell.

The palace of St. George and St. Michael was built in the years of the British protectorate. It is an elegant regency style building with an ionic peristyle, overlooking the garden.

The church of St. Spyridon is the most venerated church on the island. Inside the church there is a small crypt and the relic of St. Spyridon is laid in a silver gilt ebony casket.

The Campielo area is the oldest most authentic part of Corfu. We’ll pass through narrow alleys with Italianate houses, small squares and picturesque churches.

After walking a short distance we arrive at the new fortress of Corfu. Built in the 16th. cent, it serves as an impressive example of Italian defensive architecture. The area around the fortress is quite charming with the Tenedos church, the traditional old houses and the old Jewish neighborhood.

💦 Adventure boat tour “The Durrells and the sea”

🐚 Our crew is awaiting you with a welcome drink on board, while passing by the city of Corfu town with its remarkable pastel colored 400 year old Venetian houses and the old fortress.

🐚 Our crew will share their knowledge on the Durrell family, along with small excerpts from the Durrells’ books (Gerald Durrell’s “My family and other animals” & “Birds, beasts and relatives” and Lawrence Durrell’s “Prospero’s cell”) as well as their family biography. Of course we could not exclude showing you around all the spots where they filmed the scenes for the successful series “The Durrells” (prod. Christopher Hall, 2016-2019).

🐚 As we go on with our cruise, we can spot from afar the elegant Mon Repos Palace, where Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II’s husband was born in 1921.

🐚 Finally we will reach the idyllic “Mouse island” (Pontikonisi) with its white picturesque Greek orthodox chapel “Vlacherna”- both serve as landmarks of Corfu island.

🐚 We sail back and anchor at the beautiful uninhabited island of Vidos, where local fauna and flora exist untouched from humans.

🐚 Afterwards, we can relax on board and listen to several short stories of the Durrells whilst sailing along the east coast towards the North. We’ll come across the beautiful Venetian Villa in Kontokali, that served as the setting for the Durrells’ home in the series…and we will spot yet another idyllic chapel, that of Saint Arsenius, a serene location that Larry & Nancy Durrell favored as a swimming spot.

🐚 Last but not least, arriving at the small village of Kalami, you can have lunch at the famous White House, where Lawrence Durrell lived with his wife Nancy in the 1930s.

An unforgettable trip that promises to amaze you!
