Top Traditional Dishes of Corfu!
(BIANCO)

Is a type of stew where the main ingredient, usually a white fish, is cooked in a sauce made with garlic, white wine, potatoes, and plenty of lemon juice. It is crucial to use only fresh fish and their heads as a base for rich fish stock used for the stew.

The name (bianco = white) and preparation are a remnant of the island's Venetian history, but today it is considered one of the most emblematic local dishes. Bianco is typically served with bread on the side to soak up the flavorful sauce and, ideally, paired with local white wine.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY!

National holiday celebrated annually in Greece on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. It coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.

Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453. The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. The cry “Freedom or death” became the motto of the revolution. The Greeks experienced early successes on the battlefield, including the capture of Athens in June 1822, but infighting ensued. By 1827 Athens and most of the Greek isles had been recaptured by the Turks.

Just as the revolution appeared to be on the verge of failure, Great Britain, France, and Russia intervened in the conflict. The Greek struggle had elicited strong sympathy in Europe, and many leading intellectuals had promoted the Greek cause, including the English poet Lord Byron. At the naval Battle of Navarino, the combined British, French, and Russian forces destroyed an Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. The revolution ended in 1829 when the Treaty of Edirne established an independent Greek state.

In celebration of Greek Independence Day, towns and villages throughout Greece hold a school flag parade, during which schoolchildren march in traditional Greek costume and carry Greek flags. There is also an armed forces parade in Athens.

Top Traditional Dishes of Corfu!
(PASTITSADA)

With its roots in the Venetian cuisine, Pastitsada is probably the most famous Corfiot dish of all, and undoubtedly one of the most flavorful ones. This traditional dish consists of rooster cooked in a rich tomato-based sauce, and served with Bucatini Pasta - thick spaghetti with a bigger hole in the middle - and grated cheese. An equally delicious variation of this dish is Veal Pastitsada, where chicken is replaced with veal. The authentic pastitsada also requires spetsieriko, a secret spice mix that you can only find in one shop in Corfu Town. This hearty dish is usually enjoyed at lunchtime and is a very typical Sunday meal for locals.

Top Traditional Dishes of Corfu!
(SOFRITO)

Probably the most popular and emblematic Corfian dish is sofrito. The name of the dish clearly refers to Italian cuisine, coming from the words ‘so fritto’ that in Italian translates to ‘sauteed’ or ‘lightly fried.’This traditional dish is made from thin slices of veal that are floured, fried in a pan, and then cooked with a white sauce of finely chopped garlic, parsley, pepper, white wine, vinegar, and salt. You can serve sofrito with an assortment of sides, with the most common one being french fries or mashed potatoes.

The First University Of Greece Was Founded Here!
The Ionian University, founded in 1824 by British philhellene Frederic North, was the first university of modern Greece. The university operated in Corfu until the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece in 1864. At that time the Kapodistrian University of Athens had already been established and took over some of the most distinguished professors of the Ionian University as it was too expensive to maintain two universities in the country. In 1984 the Ionian Unversity was re-established to meet the needs for higher education during modern times.

CORFU - PORTO TIMONI

Located on the northwestern part of the island, near the small traditional village of Afionas, the beach of Porto Timoni in Corfu consists of two different but equally beautiful beaches separated by a strip of land, resulting in a unique formation that resembles a tombolo beach.

Both shores are covered with shingles and pebbles and surrounded by lush greenery, boasting crystal-clear waters in the shades of turquoise and teal! Furthermore, its seabed is ideal for snorkeling purposes, while the nearby sea cave is also worth visiting! The beaches have different water temperatures, so you may choose where to swim depending on your preferences.

The two beaches are secluded and can only be reached via a path or by boat. These off-the-beaten-track seashores are unorganized, hosting no facilities, and they are sparsely visited, mostly due to their remote location. Plus, the views over Porto Timoni are stunning at any time of the day, and a visit during the afternoon will guarantee you a worthwhile view of the sunset.

The Island Was Under Venetian, French, And British Rule!
The island of Corfu has been occupied as well as protected against the uprising Ottoman Empire by several foreign empires. After earlier occupations by the Romans and Normans, Corfu and the other Ionian Islands fell into the hands of the Venetians in 1386, who would rule over it until the end of the Venetian Republic in 1797. Between 1797 and 1799 and again from 1807 until 1814, the French ruled over the islands. The last foreign rulers to leave their mark were the British, who stayed and protected the islands from 1815 until 1864.

CORFU / ROVINIA BEACH

Rovinia is one of the spectacular beaches of Palaiokastritsa bay located at about 2km of Liapades . Rovinia can be accessed by boat from Gefyra Beach (Liapades) or Palaiokastritsa. Another exciting alternative is by walking downhill through a narrow path with wonderful vegetation.
The beach is covered with smooth and shiny white pebbles and is surrounded by the gorgeous green mountains. The whole scenery and its colors reflect perfectly into the water and provide a wonderful atmosphere.
Rovinia is a quite secluded beach with no infrastructure , maintaining its natural beauty although during high season it can get really crowded . There is sometimes just a cantine boat offering sandwiches and cold drinks.

If you are looking for a relaxing day at the beach and seek to renew yourself, Rovinia is definitely one of your best choices.
