Technological advances in the nautical world have come along in leaps and bounds since the Middle Ages and yet you still cannot beat the magical experience of sailing through the Mediterranean on-board a traditional Greek vessel. Flocks of wooden boats fill the Aegean and the Ionian Sea and these descendants of the Byzantine corvettes are very much a part of day-to-day life in the Greek islands today, just as they were more than a thousand years ago.

Welcome to our world ! 😍

From around 800 BC, ancient Greek city-states, most of which were maritime powers, began to look beyond Greece for land and resources. As a consequence, they founded colonies across the Mediterranean. Other Greek colonies were founded on the coast of Gaul, on the Cyrenaica peninsula in Africa and also in Egypt.

In this burst of colonial expansion cities such as Corinth, Miletus, Megara and Phocaea took the lead.
By 500 BC these new territories would eventually account for an incredible 40 percent of all Greeks in the Hellenic World.The first Greek colony created outside of present-day Greece was located in the Pithekousai islands (today’s Ischia, Italy).

The colony was created by Chalcidians and Eretrians between 770 and 760 BC. A few years later, the inhabitants of Chalkis and Kymi founded Kymi, opposite the Pithekousai Islands, in today’s Campania on mainland Italy.

Santorini Yachting - Our Story

Captain George was raised and educated in Australia and has over 30 years experience in skippering sea craft around the Greek Islands and is the creator of the sunset cruise in its present form! His passion for the sea and tradition has lead him to restore one of the most important boats that was used for transportation of people and goods between the islands and the mainland for centuries. It all started back in the early 90’s when he started BBQ cruises on Santorini and various islands in the Aegean – reminiscent of the Australian weekends of his youth. The boat is the S/Y Eleftheria, a 55-foot wooden built traditional Greek Kaiki -Trechandiri or working boat, which nowadays are open museums and carry memories of a world that is fading right in front of us. We also cater for VIP tours, private charters, sunset cruise and individual itineraries, BBQ trips and full day tours around Santorini and the surrounding Islands
