Following the recent earthquakes that take place near Santorini, we would like to share with you the facts, in order for you to be aware of the situation, and be able to inform your clients accordingly.
As you already read or heard, there is a seismic activity near the island of Santorini. These earthquakes take place in between the islands of Santorini-Ios-Amorgos-Anafi (and not on the island of Santorini). It has to be clear, that this activity is tectonic movement, NOT a volcanic activity. The last few days there is an increasing in volume and frequency activity, that creates a (normal) insecurity to the population of all these islands. As you heard about people leaving from the island of Santorini, we have to clarify, that this is not due to evacuation, but most of them are construction workers, going back to their base, since the construction has been suspending for this week, as well as the schools for precautional reasons. Also, there are families with children that they prefer to be in a safer place for the next days. I repeat that this is not a result of a government instruction. All though, this situation, of course, has caused concern among the people.
There have not been any collapses of any building and the videos with the landslides that are on the social media and the news, are small stones and soil that fall when it rains in general, creating the image of clouds of dust, NOT rocks, or big parts of the caldera. These images are presented more dramatical for the sake of impressiveness.
Regarding the news that civil protection staff arrived in Santorini (firemen-K9 dogs-rescuers etc) as well as medical staff, this happens because of the terrain of the island, the caldera and the possibility of landslides in case of strong earthquake, so to be able to provide immediate assistance. Nobody can predict if, where and when a strong earthquake might happen, so the government decided to proceed with these measures.
Scientists with expertise in geological phenomena (seismic and volcanic activities) are based on the island of Santorini, and monitoring the situation and any kind of activity. These professionals are the only responsible to provide any information, and for the moment the activity is in progress and resembles a similar situation back in 2011-2012. We hope that this phenomenon will end soon, of course, we will keep you updated
