Ithaka! How can anybody do anything but wonder: Ulysses criss-crossed the whole of the Aegean, left every joy-filled island he found to get back to this little island to the opposite side of the Greek Sea, the Ionion.

The day holds a very strong meaning all over Greece as it is the day the Greeks honor “Panagia” -the Mother of Christ- and her passing to heaven and at her face the sacred symbol of all mothers.

The celebrations vary from place to place but the common characteristics is fervor, passion and joyful festivities.

Pilgrimages to monasteries and churches dedicated to Panagia are common, with believers expressing their devotion through prayers, hymns, and candlelight processions.

In Tinos island as part of the ceremony are hundreds of people crawling from the harbor to the big church on their hands and knees to ask forgiveness for their sins or intervention from the Holy Mother to their problems, sometimes even a miracle.

In Kefalonia island, horse races known as Robolimni are held, showcasing equestrian skills and adding excitement to the mix.

And in some islands fishermen use to take out their boats during the night, covered in lights or flowers to symbolize the Holy Mother’s passage through darkness to the afterlife.

It all ends with the “panigyri” or the collective festivity than includes live traditional music and

dancing, fueled by alcohol and food to the village’s or town’s square, where everybody is invited to party until dawn and at same cases for a couple of days.

Simplicity. Fine Lines. Grace. Trompe l Oeil prints inspired from ancient Greece. The internationally acclaimed Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou who took the fashion world by storm with her signature designs, created the olympic torch dresses this year.

The torch for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was lit in ancient Olympia in a traditional ceremony on 16th of April 2024. Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of high priestess, wearing Mary’ s Katrantzou design, lit the torch.

The Olympic Flame is the most powerful symbol of the Olympic movement. Not only does it represent the virtues of the modern sporting competition, it also holds a link with antiquity.

According to the ritual, the High Priestess, accompanied by a group of priestesses, proceeds to the lighting at the altar in front of the Temple of Hera. Here, she calls Apollo, the God of Light, to send the sun's rays for the torch to be lit. The Olympic Flame is almost always born within a few seconds, after the torch is placed in the center of a concave mirror.

In modern tradition, the Head Priestess passes the flame to the first torchbearer and then begins the Torch Relay that finishes at the Olympic Stadium of the hosting city a few months later.

This year High Priestess and the rest of the priestesses wearing Mary’s Katrantzou dresses especially designed for the occasion and featuring her highly acclaimed prints, lit the torch and bid farewell to the flame on its long journey.
