Did you know that Chania’s lighthouse is one of the oldest in the world?
Originally built by the Venetians in the late 16th century, it once served as a crucial protector of the harbor. A chain could even be stretched between the lighthouse and the Firkas Fortress to seal off the port during times of danger.
Under Turkish rule, the lighthouse fell into disrepair until it was rebuilt between 1824 and 1832, this time taking the shape of a minaret. Many refer to it as the "Egyptian Lighthouse" because Egyptian troops, supporting the Ottoman Empire, undertook the reconstruction during their control of Crete.
Though its Venetian base remains intact, the Lion of St. Marc, once carved into its stone, is long gone. After years of damage from earthquakes and World War II bombings, a full renovation in 2005 restored the lighthouse to its current form.
Located at the end of a long mole protecting the Venetian harbor, the lighthouse offers stunning views of the port for those who make the walk. While the tower itself is closed to visitors, its historical significance and panoramic setting make it a must-see in Chania.
