Mr. Routaki was contacted by a lovely lady from the island of Samos last week. She would like to be a VoiceMap colleague. Happy to help of course.
By checking each other out we found this lovely article about a ‘marti’ bracelet.
After confirmation with Mrs Routaki if this is also done in Crete, we will publish it in the Routaki Infotheek and here on the fb page.
“Καλό μήνα! Kalo mina, have a good month!
On the first day of March, it is tradition to wear a “marti”: a self-braided bracelet made from red and white cords, symbolizing the transition from winter to spring. The name comes from the Greek word for the month of March "Martios" and is synonym for the anticipation of warmer days and blooming landscapes.
Crafted with care and adorned with symbolic beads, "marti" bracelets serve as protective talismans, shielding wearers from illness and harm. According to tradition, the bracelet protects children from diseases and the early spring sun, which is considered very harmful. The bracelet is worn from March 1st and kept on until the end of the month, or until it falls off naturally from wearing, or until the first swallow is spotted.
After that, they hang it in a fruit tree to protect the tree from external harm and wish it a good and fruitful season. If the bracelets are hung in the tree after spotting the first swallow, it is considered that birds can use the cord to build their nests.”
Καλή άνοιξη! Enjoy the spring! ❤️🇬🇷
Note: The tiny little wrist with the marti bracelet is the one from the daughter of Mrs Routaki. 🥰
