Now we're in September with gorgeous Autumn weather, it's time to dust off your hiking boots and get up into Hydra's stunning countryside. Not just for a healthy bit of exercise but to capture some of the best photos of the island's splendour without taking a drone! See Tom Barker's photo editorial of his hike with Vasilis Kastritseas back in 2020 when he did the Profitis Elias Hike. Personally, my favourite is the old ruined village at Episkopi where you seem to hover over the coastline like a seagull. Whichever hike you fancy, enjoy exploring with Vasilis this Autumn - guaranteed fun for sure. https://tombarker.exposure.co/hiking-hydra

I have to admit when I was deciding how to spend my short stay in Greece, one of the attractions of Hydra for me was the illegality of car ownership on the island. As my friends will testify, I have a habit of blithering on about the air pollution in London so for me the prospect of a picturesque is...

I can't help but be suspicious at this. Sounds like the multimillionaire clients have paid the captain to take responsibility. Fine, but will they also pay to replant the trees that their whim for fireworks destroyed. Not likely!
The captain of the privately chartered yacht which caused a pine forest fire on the island of Hydra with fireworks on June 23 has reportedly taken full responsibility for the incident.

Is anyone on Hydra missing this cat?
He is young, neutered, friendly, happy to be picked up and is obviously used to being handled and used to being allowed inside.
He's pitched up a few times asking for food with my garden colony of cats.
He doesn't behave like a cat who is used to being on the street which is why I think he is someone's pet. Please DM me if you are missing him.

It won't be many years before aerial views of Hydra will be scrutinized by the Government either.
From this article: "The comparison of the data that TEE will receive from the aerial means will be done with the electronic platform for issuing building permits (e-Permits), in order to establish whether what is being built has first been licensed and then, whether the built surface corresponds to the license or is greater than intended. If this is the case, then a building inspector will be sent to the site to establish the violations and impose sanctions." Interesting times to come!
The state will employ state-of-the art satellite and aerial technology in order to locate illegal buildings throughout Greece.

Gosh - what a downpour. Nature wasn't kind for the Miaoulia Festival with wind curbing the usual firework display. But goodness it turned up the volume for the 4th July. Although perhaps the Americans staying on the island won't have been so impressed with the howling wind, torrential downpour, cracking lightning and drumroll thunder instead of fireworks! I forgot to unplug the outside freezer so of course all the fuses snapped off. I hope everyone is safe and there's not too much damage to deal with.

Bisti & Ag. Nikolaos Beaches operating as usual on Hydra.
Fortunately, the fire of the 21st June 2024, has left the beaches unscathed and they are operating as usual now.
The volunteer Εθελοντικό Πυροσβεστικό Κλιμάκιο Ύδρας - Volunteer Fire Station of Hydra are still patrolling the inland area between the two beaches to make sure there are no hot spots but everything is quietly under control.
Yes the perpetrators were caught, arrested and appeared in court to answer charges but were not remanded in custody.
There are various stories reported in the press involving Greek nationals or people from Kazakstan possibly crew or maybe just pleasure trippers. But I can't really get an official definitive word. Hopefully, whoever is responsible for putting people in harm's way and for causing so much damage as well as the cost of dealing with the fire, will get severely fined even if they aren't imprisoned.

According to the Arson Crimes Division (D.A.E.E.), of the Fire Brigade, 13 Nationals were arrested for their criminal and irresponsible behaviour on June 21 2024 when they deliberately set off fireworks starting the fire that decimated the area of Bisti and Ag. Nikolaos on Hydra Island. They were all charged on 22 June and may face imprisonment and fines. The fire has been brought under control but teams of emergency spotters are still on the scene to put out any hotspots.

The fire that was started last night by visitors throwing fireworks from the boat they were having fun on, has been brought under control. I for one, hope that these people are thoroughly ashamed of themselves. The devastation they have brought about is inexcusable. Not only is there the cost involved in mobilizing all the emergency services that Hydra can muster, there is the higher cost to the environment and wildlife that will take years to recover. These cowardly people have apparently taken off and still haven't been found by authorities so they can be brought to account. And worse still, their irresponsible criminal behaviour put the lives of our emergency services who selflessly rushed to contain the fire with no regard for the real risk that conditions put them in. The inconsiderate criminals quite literally have put lives at risk and it's only because of the professionalism of our emergency services that no one was killed. To all visitors, please be aware that even dropping a cigarette ember can spark a devastating fire. Please, please be extra vigilant.

My garden is a sanctuary not just for cats and bees but a lovely family of hedgehogs. This one is Mum. Come September she'll be bringing her new babies for a late-night feast for sure. Last year's babies run too quickly for me to photograph. There are about eight of them that regularly come into my garden for water and snacks. If you see one in the street during the day, please try to put water down for it. They only come out in the heat of the day when they are really desperate for a drink.

Probably my most favourite view in the world - happy summer to all, love Kelsey
Yesterday's rainfall created a spectacular cascade of bouncing water on Lignou Street. When this happens, it's quite dangerous because the slippery steps and water pressure can knock you off your feet in the blink of an eye. So during the winter when these kinds of events happen more often, it's too risky to let children walk to school or for our mules to work. Hopefully today. although still drizzly, we have seen the last of this devasting weather and by the weekend we'll be back to the more normal September glorious sun and blue skies!
(Thank you to Ada for sharing)
Things you've left behind have a way of coming back to you on Hydra. Not with the conventional transport of the real world though. Here is the Hydrama donkey, Semeli, bringing my sun hat back to town just in time for summer sun protection. For me, not the donkey!
Welcome to one of the most exciting and dynamic of the Greek Islands. Hydra has a sophisticated, jet-set appeal combined with an unassumingly rural style. In spite of Hydra's dependence on mules rather than cars and the preservation order that ensures that the layout and architecture have stayed the same since the 1800's, Hydra is no Disneyland attraction. It's a busy, living home to nearly two and a half thousand full-time residents. This thriving local community is active all year. We love our returning summer visitors, meeting first-times as well as welcoming out-of-season visitors looking for an alternative winter adventure. Hydra's boutique tourism caters for everyone from the rich & famous (undercover or otherwise) to avid hikers and everyone in between. And our unique real estate and building industry work flat out to keep up with demand on this most sought-after of all the Greek Islands.
No cars, no mopeds or bikes only horses, mules & donkeys to hire on the idyllic and exclusive Hydra Island, Greece. There’s no airport on the island either and everyone, whatever their walk in life, has to WALK. It really makes the island a very social place because everyone stops to chat along the way. Locals, visitors and businesses move luggage, provisions and even building material using the largest working herd of horses and mules in the world. The national preservation order for the entire island means that there are no huge purpose-built or high rise hotels but plenty of updated, grand, 17th-century ruler's mansions rubbing shoulders with quaint traditional cottages tumbling chaotically down the side of the natural amphitheatre that embraces the harbour. Where visiting royalty, diplomats, film and music stars mingle unhindered with the more discerning travellers who come to Hydra to enjoy a totally different holiday and living experience. Welcome to Hydra Island Greece, only 1.5 hours from Piraeus by sea. A unique combination of laid back, rural charm and dynamic glamour.
On www.HydraDirect.com you will find everything you need to know about Hydra whether you are visiting for a holiday, hosting an event such as a wedding, conference or even making a film here. The site is packed with useful information for those who live on the island as well as for people who are contemplating buying property on Hydra.
As the name suggests, I host many advert pages for the different businesses of the island so visitors can get in direct contact with them via their individual contact information. But HydraDirect is more than just an advertising medium. The majority of site pages provide general information and insights about island living.
I have owned and managed HydraDirect since moving to the island in 2000. The site has changed and developed over the years along with changes in use of technology and the economic climate in Greece. Because I do all the fact-finding, most of the photography and all of the website building and coding myself, I am able to quickly adjust, edit and respond to the dramatic changes that have faced Hydra. I find the island compelling. Even though it appears timeless and to have stood still, there is always something that attracts my attention each day. Whether it’s a cat yawning, a new businesses launching, one of the many annual events, an exhibition or an external influence affecting Greece as well as Hydra, I find it interesting! Putting it simply, I adore Hydra and life on the island. I hope it comes across on my site.
I look forward to hearing from you via HydraDirect.com and to reading your comments on the HydraDirect page.
