Pyrgos was built on the top of a hill and was until the early 1800, the capital of the island. The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together and the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes becomes more tortuous. The village has many churches, around 33, but the most famous is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, where a small collection of ethnographic material and old icons are exhibits. Pyrgos is a lovely place, winter and summer alike. Although it is one of the prettiest places of the island, Pyrgos has only recently won a place on the tourist map. It has become known largely because of the splendid Easter celebrations instituted a few years ago by its deputy mayor. The day before the Plam Sunday, the whole place is fragrant with the scent of the rosemary that decorates the 17 metre cross.

Θα διαλέξετε σπάνια χειροτεχνήματα, θα αγοράσετε σπιτικό τσίπουρο, λάδι, κρασί, κάππαρη; Θα πιείτε το ποτό σας μπροστά στο πανόραμα της Σαντορίνης με την απαλή συνοδεία του πιάνου και του βιολοντσέλου; Ελάτε το Πάσχα, να δείτε πώς το εαρινό θεανθρώπινο πάθος φλέγει τις αρχαίες επάλξεις.

BICYCLE TOUR IN GREECE
1 Day Metsovo
We meet and start driving to reach our hotel in the city of Metsovo. Arrival at Metsovo and transfer to our starting point for an unique route at a high altitude. The view during this route is breathtaking! We decent through a ski resort ending at a most beautiful Monastery next to a river. We will also have the chance to visit one of the most well preserved watermills in the area. Return to our hotel. Enjoy dinner on your own. Metsovo is a place where you can find many traditional taverns with flavours which satisfy all tastes.
2 Day Metsovo – Aoos Lake
In the morning we take our first glance of the traditional Metsovo walking sightseeing aroud the city, a small traditional town of exquisite beauty with grand mansions and stone-paved streets. You will have the chance to admire the old church of Aghia Paraskevi, the Evangelos Averof Gallery, which contains paintings and sculptures by famous Greek artists and the Michail Tositsa mansion, which houses the Museum of Popular Art. Afterwards transfer to our starting point for today’s cycling route around the artificial lake of Aoos river springs. We will cycle for about 40 km in a place that you will remember for a lifetime. Return to Metsovo. The rest of the day is free for personal memories.
3 Day Metsovo - Aspraggeli – Monodendri – Kipoi
During this day we cycle where Epirus is known for, the famous Vikos gorge and Pindus National park. By mini bus first we travel to reach there and then we grab our gear for cycling. Soon enough we visit the first village of our route, Aspraggeli. Then through another magnificent village, Vitsa, we visit Monodendri. From there we reach St. Paraskevi Monastery. The view towards Vikos gorge is breathless! We return to Monodendri ending the first half of our day tasting a traditional local pie and a lot of moments to remember. Then we ride the same route back and then we turn to start our decent in order to meet Aoos River with its spectacular old bridges! The next village to admire will be Kipoi. Free time to create your own precious memories! Return to our hotel.
4 Day Metsovo – Ioannina
In the morning transfer to the city of Ioannina. This day is full of cycling around the lake and sightseeing in the city. We start for our grand tour around the lake. During this tour we visit the Monastery of Ntourachani, an old Monastery of the 15th century. Then we head for Perama, which is famous for its cave, known as the “Cave of Pearama”. This cave, extending five kilometers below the ground and have been explored only up to 1 kilometer, has a remarkable arrangement of stalagmites and stalactites. After the visit we enter the city of Ioannina where we have the chance to visit the old city and museums. Later in the day, we take a boat so as to visit the small island, located in Pamvotis lake of Ioannina. We end the day tasting local dishes and local wine in the city. We return to our hotel in Metsovo.
5 Day Metsovo – Meteora
This day we made our way from Metsovo across the Katara pass, down to Meteora, the world famous Monasteries which have been built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly. The landscape is simply stunning!!! All of these monasteries are located at Metéora in Greece, and most of them are perched on high cliffs and now accessible by staircases cut into the rock formations. They were created to serve monks and nuns following the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Of the six intact monasteries, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and Monastery Roussanou are inhabited by nuns. And the important think to know is that the Meteora is included on the Unesco World Heritage List! Return to Metsovo.
6 Day Metsovo – Return
After a delightful breackfast we say goodbye to Metsovo and we head on our way back taking with us all these valuable moments we experienced!!!
