The French Revolution ( French : Révolution française ) was a period of great social and political upheaval in France , lasting from 1789 to 1799. It overthrew the monarchy, established a form of democracy, went through periods of violent political unrest, and culminated in a dictatorship under Napoleon Bonaparte . Many of the principles of the revolution were transmitted to Western Europe and beyond. Inspired by liberal and radical ideas, the revolution radically changed the course of modern history, causing the decline of absolute monarchies worldwide and their replacement by democracies .
