HELPFUL TIPS FOR NEW PADDLEBOARDERS
Stand-up paddleboarding (also known as SUP) is a fantastic full-body workout that people of all ages can learn how to do and enjoy.
Always make sure the fin of the paddleboard is facing upwards so that it does not get damaged by stones on the beach.
Stay close to the coastline for safety and wear a life-jacket especially if you are not a very strong swimmer.
Adjust your paddle so that it is the correct height for you. To adjust the length of the paddle for you hold it in your hand and extend your arm above your head- this is roughly the length the paddle needs to be. SUP paddles have a slight bend where the shaft meets the blade- the bent angle of the paddleβs throat should point towards you so the face of the blade is forward.
Keep the leash attached to your ankle when on the board so that the board always stays nearby and is easy to retrieve if you fall off.
Get used to the feel of the board in the water by firstly staying on your knees for a while . Try different paddle strokes to get used to how the board moves on the water and once you feel stable and ready you can try standing up.
Start by standing near the centre of the paddleboard with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent for stability.
Hold your paddle with one hand on the top of the handle and the other hand on the shaft, keeping your arms straight and your core engaged. Use your core muscles to rotate your torso as you paddle rather than relying solely on your arms.
Switch the paddle from one side to the other regularly to paddle evenly and prevent fatigue.
When you are new to paddleboarding it is important to learn to fall down safely into the water away from the board to avoid hitting the board on your way down.
Try to focus your eyes on the horizon in front of you rather than looking at your feet as it will help you balance and gain more stability.
It is best to start out paddling in calm flat water with minimal wind or currents- always check the weather.
You will soon gain confidence and feel more comfortable on your board and you will soon master turning your board the more you practice.
Relax your body, keep your legs and knees flexible and feel the water movement under you. If you encounter waves or wake from motor boats, allow your knees to move up and down with the motion of the water.
Remember, youβre doing this to have fun so if you feel tired take a break by kneeling or sitting down on your board for a while.
ENJOY!! HAVE FUN!! RELAX!!
