The Town Hall of Ermoupolis in Miaouli square is one of Greece's largest and most impressive Town Halls.
The town Hall was built in 1876 under Ernst Ziller's supervision, the architectural genius from Saxony who made Greece his home married a Greek and designed hundreds of buildings in Greece.
Ermoupolis, the "city of Hermes," the god of trade, was established during the Greek Revolution by refugees from other less fortunate islands like Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Psara, Kasos, and Ayvalik. They found shelter to settle down and rebuild their lives. Within a few years, the island became the principal port of Greece and exhibited exceptional artistic and cultural progress. Ermoupolis was described by many as an "economic miracle."

Hello there!

Usually the focus is on the neoclassical mansions as if the island’s history began when they started to appear in the mid to late 19th century and onward. Of course, I admire these impressive buildings. Still, I also find the traditional village houses like the one in the picture intriguing and attractive. They have their individual stories to tell and interesting architectural secrets to reveal. So I always look out for them and smile when they are well preserved.

These buildings - initially small and rectangular in size - harmoniously blend into the natural environment while taking advantage of the land's resources. They are built in crevices on rocks to conserve material, use cavities for cisterns and storage spaces, are therefore protected from wind and rain. They often look like they are rising out of the earth.


Η φακός συνήθως στρέφεται στα νεοκλασικά αρχοντικά λες και η ιστορία του νησιού να ξεκίνησε όταν άρχισαν να εμφανίζονται εκείνα, στα μέσα έως τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα και μετά. Φυσικά, θαυμάζω τα εντυπωσιακά αυτά κτίρια. Ωστόσο, βρίσκω ενδιαφέροντα και ελκυστικά τα παραδοσιακά σπίτια του χωριού, όπως αυτό της εικόνας. Και αυτά έχουν να μας φανερώσουν τη δική τους ιδιαίτερη ιστορία και τα ενδιαφέροντα αρχιτεκτονικά μυστικά. Πάντα τα προσέχω και χαμογελώ όταν είναι καλοδιατηρημένα.

Τα κτίσματα - αρχικά μικροί και ορθογώνιοι όγκοι - εναρμονίζονται και αφομοιώνονται στο φυσικό περιβάλλον εκμεταλλευόμενα την ίδια στιγμή όλες τις δυνατότητες που τους παρέχει το έδαφος. Αναπτύσσονται μέσα σε εσοχές, σε βράχους για οικονομία υλικών, χρησιμοποιούν κοιλότητες για δεξαμενές και αποθηκευτικούς χώρους, προστατεύονται από τον άνεμο και τη βροχή. Είναι σαν να φυτρώνουν μέσα από τη γη.

🔹The southernmost point of Syros on Cape Viglostasi is the Lighthouse. One can take the pathway starting at the South end of Komito beach and begin to ascend. Make sure you are wearing hiking shoes and long pants. The walk on a trail is approx 1.5 km and then another 500m South, 30-40 minute hike.
The view from there is breathtaking. Facing South and looking to your right as you turn left, on a clear day, you will notice Kithnos, Serifos, Sifnos, and then Antiparos and Paros to the SouthEast.
The hiking groups on Syros will sometimes follow a much longer route that begins in Megas Gialos. The Lighthouse is an active and important one, but there is not much to be noted about the structure. However, the walk and view are worth the hike.

🔹Το νοτιότερο σημείο της Σύρου στο Ακρωτήριο Βιγλοστάσι είναι ο Φάρος. Το μονοπάτι ξεκινάει από το τέρμα της παραλίας Κόμητο και αρχίζει να ανεβαίνει.
Η ανάβαση είναι περίπου 1,5 χλμ. Και στη συνέχεια άλλα 500 μέτρα, 30-40 λεπτά πεζοπορία.
Η θέα από εκεί είναι μαγευτική. Ατενίζοντας νότια σε μια καθαρή μέρα, θα δείτε δεξιά σας την Κύθνο, τη Σέριφο, τη Σίφνο και νοτιοανατολικά την Αντίπαρο και την Πάρο.
Οι ομάδες πεζοπορίας στη Σύρο ακολουθούν συχνά μια μεγαλύτερη διαδρομή που ξεκινά από τον Μέγα Γιαλό.
Ο φάρος είναι σημαντικός και σε λειτουργία, για το κτίσμα του δεν έχουμε να πούμε κάτι. Ωστόσο, η βόλτα και η θέα αξίζουν την πεζοπορία.

In the mountain of Apano Meria, on your way from Ano Syros to Kampos, you used to often meet these kind and patient animals customarily transporting the locals' goods.
Nowadays, only a few are left to come and go through the narrow alleys of Chora with its countless steps.

"Chora" literally means Country: every Cycladic island used to name its main town "Chora." Ano Syros was the first town on the island; therefore, the locals still use the name "Chora" when referring to Ano Syros.

Στην Απάνω Μεριά της Σύρου, από την Άνω Σύρο μέχρι τον Κάμπο συναντουσες αυτά τα καλοκάγαθα, υπομονετικά ζώα που έκαναν τις μεταφορές των κατοίκων.
Τώρα έχουν μείνει λιγοστά να περνωδιαβαίνουν στα στεναδάκια της Χώρας με τα αναρίθμητα σκαλάκια της.

Περνωδιαβαίνω : πηγαινοέρχομαι
Στεναδάκια : στενοί δρόμοι
Χώρα : κάθε κυκλαδονησι την πόλη του την έλεγε "Χώρα ".
Η Άνω Σύρος ήταν η πρώτη "πόλη" του νησιού και για τους ντόπιους έχει μείνει μεταξύ τους η ονομασία "Χώρα ".
