Meet our enchanted forest!! 🪵🌿🧚‍♀️

Last Sunday, we woke up at the villa and the view was breathtaking...
I had to try and capture a little bit of magic to give you a taste ☺️

Honestly, if a fairy or a goblin had popped up from behind a tree, I wouldn't have been one bit surprised! 🧚‍♀️

Winter Pelion is all about the magic... 🪄✨️

Brooks💧, mist, holly trees, spooky trees 🪵😄, ivy 🌿, mushrooms🍄 ...

(All photos and videos were taken just outside the villa yard. It's like you literally take one step outside and you're in the forest 🙂🌳)

👉 Would you enjoy a Sunday morning walk in the woods, and afterwards some hot chocolate, while snuggling on the sofa by the fireplace ? 🔥 ☕️

Have you ever tasted a during a visit to Greece? If you have, you know that sweet, crisp, and juicy apple deliciousness 🍎😍
If you haven't, you really should put in on your list of things to do during your holidays in Pelion! 💯

Why? Well, because (the famous apples of Zagora, which is the largest village in Pelion) are No1🥇 in the world!! 🙌
This is based on the TasteAtlas list of the 10 best apple varieties in the 🌎 for 2024.
Firiki Piliou, another well-known variety found in South Pelion, is also on the list!! Two Greek varieties, both coming from Pelion!!

Of course, there's a reason... and that is the fact that Pelion has the perfect, unique micro-climate and weather conditions for apple cultivation!💧🌊

Frequent rainfalls and the sea breeze that keeps the fertile soil moist are behind this incredible success, as are the strict european guidelines that are religiously followed.

Nothing would have happened, of course, if it hadn't been for the hard-working people of Zagora, Pouri, and Makrirachi (again, the beautiful village you see in our view photos 😍)

These people managed to make Zagorin a brand known to the four corners of the world, something that makes us really proud!! If you live outside Greece, you may have come across the Zagorin brand 🍎🇬🇷

Apples are dominant in the local gastronomy, as they are used in various forms, from jams and syrupy deserts to apple pies, apple syrup (molasses) in salads at local restaurants, and more!!

As our guests, when it's their season, we'll welcome you with a few of these delicious apples, as well as some apple/apple-orange juice manufactured locally, to experience the taste yourself🥃

This is from a live we did earlier today on instagram. It's at Papa Nero Beach, in Pelion. It's a beautiful beach, (although I don't know how much of its beauty you can see here, the reception was pretty bad)
Here we're giving you some info in case you want to visit it sometime in the future. It's less than 15 minutes from A Dream Deferred, and it's right next to Agios Ioannis beach, a really famous place in Pelion. Have you ever been here? Would you visit? Tell us below!! 😘

"Secret school" in Pelion, Greece ...?🤔
What is that?

It might seem strange now, but back when Greece was under the Ottoman rule, there were long periods during the almost 400-year-occupation when Greeks were not allowed to learn how to read and write in their language.📚

But the Greeks were too stubborn to obey the Turks. During those times, priests or monks would secretly act as teachers, and chapels, dark basements or even caves became the schools where Greeks learned how to read and write.🕯📖

One such school was the Κρυφό Σχολειό - Kryfo Scholio (Secret School), which you'll find between Fakistra and Damouchari. It is actually a cave, right at the edge of the rocky coastline, high above sea level. 🪨🌊

There, from the year 1668 lived an old monk, a hermit, all by himself, who taught the children of Tsangarada how to read and write. You can still see the remains of his small hermitage. His only company was an icon of Παναγία Μεγαλομάτα (Madonna of large eyes). When the children came, he would place a wooden plank on the rocks, to serve as a bridge, since the spot was otherwise detached from the outside world.

But, eventually, the secret reached pirates' ears...🏴‍☠️ they sailed to the cove and climbed up, expecting to find treasures. When they found nothing, they got furious and killed the poor, old monk... ☠️
Next to his cave, you'll find the church called "Madonna of large eyes", which is another tiny cave with a wooden door. 💒 The icon of Virgin Mary that kept the monk company, is now in Tsangarada.

For those of you wishing to visit, the path becomes steep and rocky, so make sure you wear hiking shoes. 👟👟 The view, however, will definitely make up for the difficult descent.

So, I guess we finally did it!! 🙌🙌🙌

We 've got a brand new whirlpool bath on the premises...! 💧 It fits so perfectly that we can't even remember what the place looked like before... 💙

We've got so much to share with you about the whirlpool bath itself, its amazing, healing properties, or the fact that it is a lot more sustainable than we thought, and the fact that our own special adjustments will make it even more sustainable...

But, for now, let us just try to describe to you that feeling of total relaxation we had when we tried it for the first time two days ago...
That sense of total surrender to the warmth of the lukewarm water and the gurgling sound of the tiny waterfall... -btw, this must be exactly what being in our mother's womb felt like... 🫄 Your heartbeat slows down, your breathing gets deeper, and your mind becomes tranquil and free from all thoughts.

Now, try to combine this with the overwhelming, infinity view of Pelion ⛰️ & the Aegean Sea 🌊, the calming sounds of Nature, or, if you wish, your favourite music coming out of the whirlpool bath speakers... Add a hawk 🦅flying high over your head, a passing butterfly 🦋, the occasional bird singing 🐦 and you've got the whole picture...

OR, better yet, "the Dream Deferred whirlpool bath Experience... " 💙💙

Let me tell you, I'd never felt more pampered in my life... 😆 Our guests are about to receive some very special treatment!!!

When I see these photos, I get so mad!! 😤😠

Not because they're not pretty enough... Our dear photographer, , quite obviously did an incredible job at showcasing all the strong points of A Dream Deferred villa. Mind you, all that green and blue is there, exactly as shown, for our guests to gaze upon when they wake up in the morning.

What drives me mad is that no camera in the world can capture the real beauty of this view in its actual dimensions... 📷 🤳 Whatever happens, the sea will always seem twice further than it really is, the magnitude of the Aegean will forever be understated, and the forest will inevitably miss out on its actual beauty...🌊🌊🌊🌳🌲

But, then I say, it's OK... no, really, it is!! 💯👌

Because this way, we still get to see that beloved look of "pleasant shock" on our guests' faces when they drive up to the villa and even before getting out of the car, invariably fix their eyes upon that infinite blue for the first time... you know, Stavros & I secretly look out for it 😃, because it's our guests' first sign that says, "We weren't fooled by the photos, the view is even better than advertised"...

...OK, perhaps that seems a lot to get just from one look, but we've had enough guests so far to be able to know what we see... 😆 Most of them go ahead and express their thoughts quite eloquently right after, anyway... 💙🩵

I still wish there could be a way to communicate all this, though 😕

Do you get the same frustration when you take photos of incredible places, but "that damn photo just can't seem to do the place justice?" 😤

(💭Just a few thoughts on women and hospitality, please bear with me for a minute 🙂)

This day is dedicated to women. And rightly so. It is a day for all of us, women and men, to acknowledge the significance of the struggles of older generations of women, which have offered modern day women the luxury to take the rights they enjoy for granted. ✌️

Still, despite the fact that they play a major role in society, women go unnoticed most of the time... you'll see it in every area, including that of hospitality. 🏠

Hospitality is, in most cases, run by women: cleaners, cooks, waiters, and hosts, are in most cases, women. And they hold positions that are vastly underrated. 🙆

I once read that the most popular host type is that of a woman in her 50s - 60s. It's the profile that guests consider as the safest choice.
Coincidence? 🤔

What do we all want as guests❓️
I'd say, our needs to be met, and our expectations to be fulfilled.Sometimes we even wish to be "pampered" a little 😄 We want to enjoy comfort, but to also have someone take care of the details for us... I might go as far as to say that it's like we want to be "mothered" sometimes on holiday... 🍼

Well, who's been assigned that role in society? Though I'm not advocating, of course, that women are the only ones who can attend to and nurture others, so far, they have been "the nurturers"... 🤷‍♀️

Photo dump from our little hiking adventure/goldmine search 🚶‍♀️🚶✨️ on the outskirts of Kissos, up on Pelion Mountain this past weekend...

We shot these pictures near a settlement that belongs to Kissos village. It's called Agios Konstantinos, and it's about 10 mins by car from the village centre. We went there looking for the 3 different mines which used to be a source of wealth for Kissos many many years ago, (they say the very name of "Kissos" derives from the local pronunciation of Chrisos (Gold) that was mined here, which sounded like "K'sos") ✨️✨️

*Fun Fact: It was probably this goldmine that provided the locals with the gold used for the gilding of the altarpiece of Agia Marina Church in Kissos, the oldest church on Pelion mountain (1650) ⛪️

Anyway, we weren't able to find the mines this time, (we are coming back for them, though) but we did get a chance to go hiking and savour the beauty of the mountain... The first flowers have already appeared 🌺 and the first butterflies are already here 🦋 Some of them are so friendly that you will find them land on you to have a quick rest, as you can see in the photos 😀 The bees are already hard at work, producing the fine, excellent quality Pelion honey... 🐝

Nature hasn't fully bloomed yet.
However, it feels like it's slowly waking up, and it's a pleasure to see it before your eyes...

(BTW, what you hear is a stream, a few metres away... 🏞 streams are now brimming with water as the snow ❄️ from the mountain top melts and flows towards the sea...💧)

You know when your Google account is a mess, your Google Drive crammed, and there's no more room for 📸? 🙈
Well, I reached that point today...
Google photos insisted that I tidy up my account 😆

As I was deleting, however, I came across 3 photos from 2018, when we first decided to host... our 2nd bedroom, before and after a total make-over!

I had honestly forgotten what it looked like! The room had to be designed from scratch:
First, we had to think about the decorative style of the room - vintage, scandinavian, boho..? Obviously, boho-scandi won🏆

At the same time, we decided on placing 3 beds to increase the guest number: 1 queen ➕️ 2 twin beds.
But then, inevitably came the million-dollar question:
How can we fit the 🛌 so as to avoid a "stuffy" feel?

It took a long Pinterest 📌 search to come up with a solution, but nothing seemed to fit! Also, compact hotel-style furniture looked too cookie-cutter and impersonal... We had almost given up and opted for 2 bunk beds, but a good friend of ours urged us to keep trying... we said to ourselves, "There's always a way," and then, just like that, inspiration came! 💡
We took advantage of the walls 🧱 and had floating beds installed, spreading them out on 2 levels...

That's not all!
We wanted the room to be unique. That's why we designed the rocking 🛌 ourselves, to double as a mini playground for all ages ❤️. Our dear carpenter, , made it all happen 🙂😍 In fact, I'll bet there's no other bed like this!

We also wanted the room to reflect cosiness, but also adventure... that's why we had wooden🪜installed, as well as rope ones! And, we DIYed, among others, 2 floating shelves to serve all 3 beds, + sockets,and a light switch for the upper beds.

OK guys, we need your help!! 🙏
(Read till the end)

As you may already know, we have a reading corner for kids 📚.
Ever since the very start, the space under the stairs🪜 had cried out to me (Katerina)... It needed something, and it wasn't long before I knew what: a place for the -usually- most overlooked guests... children!

(The truth is, I would have loved to have something like this as a kid myself, so it's a little like making my childhood wish come true 👓 😆)

I decided to paint a forest 🌳🍂🍃 on the walls to resemble the Pelion forests, Stavros put up the shelves and we had our electrician bring power under the stairs in order to install a lamp, (I'm in love with this vintage lamp btw 😍, we upcycled it and I think it goes with this concept beautifully).

Then we bought thick rugs and cushions 🧸 to make the corner nice, warm, and cosy for the little ones and brought in the board games 🎲🧩 and the books 📖

What I love most, is when parents tell me how they couldn't get their kids to leave it and go to bed, (some wished to fall asleep there, once a family even inquired whether we could put a mattress there for their child to sleep 😍)

We'd be lying if we said that we weren't happy with the outcome, but there's always room for improvement (and this is where you come in...) What more could we add/change?🤔 We would love your ideas on this! 💡👇

What does Valentine's Day mean to you? 💘

I (Katerina) had plenty of discussions with my teenage students today, all of which were initiated by the same question: "Are you celebrating today, Ms?" 🩷

During our discussions, I heard just about every opinion there is... 🤷‍♀️ Some students defended the meaning of this day, others talked about how "commercialised" it is and how they don't need Saint Valentine's to remind them to celebrate their love for their partner... 🧐👎(I must add here that St Valentine is a Catholic Saint, so it's a relatively new entry for Orthodox Greece...)

But, you know what? You don't have to buy the chocolates, or the flowers, or celebrate this day like everyone else does if you don't want to... you can have a movie night 🎞 or bake a cake 🥮 yourself, or plan a short trip, a brief getaway for a couple of days🧳✈️, or just spend some time together...

Besides... not liking Saint Valentine's because it's commercialised...?🤔 It surely isn't as commercialised as Christmas!? 🎅
And yet, nobody says, "I don't want to celebrate Xmas this year. It's too commercialised", do they? 🤷‍♀️

What's the first thought that crosses your mind when you see this photo? Beauty ❄️, or peril? ⚠️

Each time we drive up the mountain, when everything's white and covered in snow, my heart rejoices... 🩵
..And, at the same time, I can't help but think how there are so many people who are afraid to drive up 🚗 to the mountains once it's snowed, thus never getting to witness them in all their winter glory... ❄️ What a pity to be missing out on this magnificent sight, indeed 😟

It's true that snowfall in Greece is not something we're all familiar with... 🤷‍♀️ it depends on which part of Greece you come from and how many times you've experienced it.
Still, I'd like to somehow be able to let everyone know that Pelion is one of the SAFEST places to drive in winter! The roads literally never close!
That's because, before the first ❄️ ever touches the ground, all snow ploughs are up and running... Road salt is strewn onto the roads 24-7, which means that no matter how heavy the snowfall, you'll never get snowed in!
- Of course, this could be positive or negative, depending on your mood 😆 (for me, getting snowed-in is my wildest phantasy!!😜)

So soon?! 😯😮

Our 3rd Traveller Review Award is already here, and we can't even remember what it was like for us before we became hosts... We've come to feel as comfortable hosting people, as we do teaching them...📚

Imagine that!! 😄

You know, hosting is something that can give you lots of pleasure, as you are interacting with people whose vacations have just started, so they usually feel relaxed, they're in their best mood and filled with dreams and expectations about the wonderful times they're going to have at your place... 💭💭

And this, right there is the catch... because you need to do your best to make sure their dreams are fulfilled and their expectations are not shattered. They need to leave smiling widely, for you to be allowed to say:

"Yes! We did it!"🙏🙌

That's why this award -your award- means so much to us... it means we actually "did it" this year, too!! 😍

😱 Who moved the rock, guys ⁉️

Is this some kind of photoshop?? 😲

No, no photoshop, just an example of what Zeus 😶‍🌫️ with his lightnings⚡️⚡️and Poseidon with his trident 🔱 can do when they get mad... 😆

"Ουδέν κακόν αμιγές καλού" is what the 🏛Greeks have been saying for thousands of years (roughly meaning that every cloud has a silver lining)

Well, the "cloud" in this case is Storm Daniel, and the "silver lining" is wider, longer beaches!! ⛱️ 😀 You see, in September, Storm Daniel brought tons of river sand, pebbles etc from the mountain down to the sea, creating new, wider, even more comfortable beaches for everyone!!!

The only thing is that our favourite Mylopotamos beach Rock, which used to be found about 30 metres into the sea and which served as a natural spring board, is now nearly on the beach!!

So, come visit Mylopotamos beach this summer... It's brand new!! 👌

What's left now, is to see whether the newly formed part of the beach will slowly be swept away by the waves or not ...🌊

One-of-a-kind design You will be using & sleeping on furniture that to a large part has been custom designed or upcycled especially for the villa - a lot of the time by us! More often than not, there's a story behind each piece that we would be happy to share with you! 2. Handmade- upcycled elements Your stay will be made more comfortable by using our unique, handmade pillows, wall drawings & paintings - even throw blankets. After all, we feel very passionate about "slow design," handmade crafts, organic materials, and generally speaking, sustainable hospitality. 3. Attention to detail It's in our blood - we can't fight it 🫣 When it comes to our guests we are perfectionists, so get ready to be the focus of our attention from the beginning to the end of your stay, (in case that sounded a bit threatening, let us clarify 😄 that we won't be a pain on your neck, we're actually really discrete!) A glimpse of the Pelion Sea waves in winter... pretty different from the calm, crystal clear blue waters of the summer! 🏖 And yet, she's so beautiful, isn't she? Greek beaches, in all their summer beauty, are so appealing to us during the winter months. So much so that, even though spots higher up, (villages, the ski resort and the forest) steal the winter show 🙂, whenever we're in Pelion, we always make sure to take a long, relaxing walk on the beach.
