Greece is full of history, but not all of it has Greek roots. Built in the 13th century, the Castle of Agia Paraskevi stands proudly above the town of Neapoli. The castle was built by the Franks in order to control the area. Nowadays, the castle invites visitors to enjoy the view of the gulf, as they imagine the castle's past glory.

The castle was built during Frankish rule, until William II of Villehardouin granted it to the lords of Monemvasia. Later the area became a part of the Despotate of Mystras.

The castle is a protected cultural heritage monument and is well worth a short visit. It is a wonderful site from which you can enjoy epic views as you adventure along the spiralling paths which lead inside the ruins.

On the southeast coast of Laconia, at the foot of the village of Biglafia, you can find the ruins of a vast prehistoric settlement. Abandoned around 3,000 years ago, it now lies on the beach and just below the surface of the crystal blue sea.

The submerged city of Pavlopetri is one of the most famous underwater archaeological sites. The remains suggest that the settlement covered an area of nearly 50,000 square meters (equivalent to seven soccer pitches). Research of Pavlopetri has provided unparalleled insight into the life of an Aegean coastal town. Some archaeologists have postulated that the city was abandoned due to destructive volcanic activity in the area, but the full causes of Pavlopetri's demise are still as yet unexplained.

The architectural remains are visible at a depth ranging from one to three meters, making it a great snorkeling destination. Tombs have been found dug into the rocks of the coast and others in the dunes of the beach meaning that everyone can see a piece of the ancient site even if they don't enjoy diving.

Pavlopetri is a wonderful ancient site that is located on a magnificent stretch of beach. Here you can swim, dive, suntan and enjoy a little piece of ancient history!

Sheep and goats are the predominant animals farmed here. Due to their robust nature that makes them able to endure the rigors of the rocky mountains and exposure to the elements, sheep and goat farming is considered to be one of the most dynamic sectors of the rural economy in Greece, both in terms of employment and overall income.
Pastoral farming has been a feature of Greek life since antiquity. The geomorphology of the area, climatic conditions and the prevailing systems of agricultural production in lowland regions at any given time have all been conducive to the development and preservation of this productive system until the present day.

Ancient olive trees in our area- Peloponnesos - a lot of them!

The olive tree of Vouves in Crete, Greece is probably the oldest olive tree in the world and it still produces olives. It is confirmed to be at least 2000 years old based on tree ring analysis, but it's claimed to be between 3000–4000 years old! But we have them too! Beautiful walks in the hills and old groves of Elika:-)

Things to see:
The Turkish ship Kaptan Ismail Hakki, built in 1970, is 58 meters long and 9 meters wide. It sank on 30/01/1978 supposedly due to a cargo shift. The shipwreck is lying on its left side, and remains intact. At its shallowest the ship is 2 meters down, while its maximum depth is at 11 meters. Though it is a bit of an adventure to find the shipwreck, diving it is well worth the search. The sea is crystal clear and you only need a snorkel and mask to explore sunken hull.

Deatailed info how to find the ship:

It is spring cleaning time! Spring comes with it's joys and many jobs. The
Thaumetopoea Pinivora, the Eastern Pine Processionary, has been hard at it eating our pine trees and we doing our best to save the pines from these ferocious, furry beasts. It is certainly a losing battle, but it is still wonderful to spend time in the garden as the weather improves. We are working hard and looking forward to seeing old friends and greeting new guests as the summer quickly approaches. Please reach out to us if you have any tips on how to control the Pine Processionary!

Sea salt. I have always wondered how to make sea salt naturally. We had a go last year, but without much success - the rain came and that was that. This evening we came across a local mass production of this irreplaceble ingredient, hidden in Asprudia, only a few kilomiters away from our villas. Sea salt has such an unique flavour, that adds so much depth, not only to savoury dishes but also to sweet ones. Those who have tasted our salted caramel bars, understand what am I talking about;) Anyway...this year we are going to give it a go again.

Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the six most threatened mammals in the world. In 1993, the population was estimated at 200-250, but thanks to Hellenic Society for the Study & Protection of the Mediterranean Monk Seal and their protection program, its status has been upgraded to "endagered". We were extremely lucky to see a young seal during one of morning walks on Pounta beach!

Best veggies in the area! We are very lucky because we have access to fresh veggies all year round. The local veggie stall is located between the villages of Agios Georgios and Agios Apostoli, under a majestic pine tree. Seasonal, locally grown veggies so fresh that there is still soil on them! Our "veggie lady" also sells eggs, honey, olives and sometimes tomato passata. Make sure you use your fresh veggies to make mouthwatering Greek salad!

Another beautiful spring walk near Sparta...This time we opted for an easy one that ambles alongside the Evrotas river, just past the picturesque village of Kastorio, on the north slope of Tayegatos. We were lured by the promise of a Byzantine marble bridge, but we were not lucky enough to find it. We do have a history of taking the wrong path from time to time, however this time we went in altogether the wrong direction! Nonetheless, we had a beautiful walk drinking in the juicy variety of greens, which in our dry corner are rare. Once at home, with a little reasearch, we found out that in Kastorio there is a trout and salmon farm, producing delicacies for mezze. Just another reason for us to start planning another trip to the area! Hopefully next time we'll be lucky and find the bridge;-)

Although calendar spring started a couple of weeks ago, it's only about now, that we truly start to feel it! The sun gets warmer and higher with each day. The plants have finally blossomed, and the trees are covered in their fresh leaves. The birds have returned along with their bright songs. With all being reborn we would like to wish you all Καλό Πάσχα!

Limnes walk. Limnes and Marathias are small villages about 20 minutes away from Viglafia, and our houses. During the spring you can enjoy beautiful walks, one that leads to an old tower build upon a hill, that noone knows the real purpose of. The other walk will take you through endless olive groves. During the summer, you will find small hidden beaches and coves, in which you can escape from people, and fully embrace the sunshine. Marathias also offers you a couple of bars and tavernas that you can enjoy during the summer months.

Greece is much more than just beaches. The cooler months make it possible to explore the countryside. One of our favorite early spring walks is to Cape Maleas lighthouse. The lighthouse is on the southernmost tip of Pelleponesos and is not accessible by car. With cliffs and sea on one side and young spring blooms on the other, it makes for great hike.

Summer is almost here, so it is time for a quick reflection on the passing of winter. Though most people think about Greece as a summer destination it is also amazing in the cooler months. The weather is generally warm all year round, and the light is bright and crisp without the heat haze that hangs over summer days. Winter is the perfect time to see the ancient sites, walk countless trails, go on long hikes or do some surfing or fishing. The villages are quiet and the locals are relaxed and excited to share their stories. So next year, when the thermometer falls below zero, and the sky is grey, perhaps try a Greek winter adventure.
