We had a great time walking around the Lyceum’s tree filled groves and yes, it was here, in this incredibly significant spot that Aristotle developed and taught his own method of inductive reasoning, observing the workings of the world around him and then reasoning from the particular to a knowledge of essences and universal laws.

Athenian Treasury at Delphi was constructed by the Athenians to house dedications made by their city and citizens to the sanctuary of Apollo. The entire treasury, including its sculptural decoration, is built of Parian marble; its date of construction is disputed, scholarly opinion ranging from 510 to 480 BCE. Pausanias mentions the building in his account of the sanctuary, claiming that it was dedicated from the spoils of the Battle of Marathon, fought in 490 BCE.

The terrace of the Lions in the sacred island of Delos in the heart of the Aegean Sea.
The Lion’s’ statues were dedicated to the god Apollo by the people of Naxos island before 600 BC.
There were nine to twelve marble guardian lions along the Sacred Way. Today only seven of the original lions remain.

According to Cynicism, humans are rational beings, and the path to happiness and fulfillment lies in attaining virtue by aligning oneself with nature and following one's innate sense of reason. This involves living a simple, unashamed life free from societal norms and conventions. The Cynics vehemently rejected conventional desires such as wealth, power, fame, social status, conformity, and material possessions, openly mocking and disregarding these values in public.
In their philosophy, progress toward virtue and thereby happiness is achieved primarily through ascetic practices (ἄσκησις), which aim to liberate individuals from the influence of worldly distractions like wealth, fame, and power—things perceived as having no intrinsic value in the natural order. Instead, they advocated embracing a life characterized by endurance and pain.

Philosophy in pieces - “The Allegory of the Cave”
For Plato, reality is but a construction and the allegory serves as a wake-up call for people to seek the truth and not settle for what they see in front of them as reality and truth.
In the allegory, the prisoners in the cave symbolize what our human existence is like if we do not question things and seek the truth.
If we open our minds to new ideas and belief systems, we can expand our own mind. And when we do that, we will no longer wish to step back into the darkness of the world.
But what about the Others?
Do those who worked hard in order to reach the truth and achieve inner tranquility have any moral obligation to return to the cave to help the Others?

Philosophy in pieces
We use to give so much attention to what philosophers have thought or written, when what really counts is what they do.
As Epictetus (Enchiridion 46) puts it: “Don’t explain your philosophy, embody it”.
What someone says is not important as far as he doesn’t live up to what he says.
This is a core distinction that separates Cynicism, Stoicism and the Socratic tradition from other philosophical schools.
Philosophy isn’t about big words or complicated texts but about action and virtue.
Marcus Aurelius (Meditations 10.16): "Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one."

We wish for luck, good fortune, a blessing from God. We hope that, in this way, happiness will come to us. For the Stoics, goodness and therefore happiness lies only within us but we need to dig deep inside our own thoughts, deep inside our own soul to find it.

A task hard and painful but worth a try.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 7.59: “Look within. Within is the fountain of good, and it will ever bubble up, if thou wilt ever dig.”

Most of the time we blame our bad luck, the Gods or the Others for every bad thing that makes us suffer. At the same time we happily disregard our own moral responsibility. Nevertheless, for the Stoics the source of our suffering is not the Others but our own inability to correctly evaluate the things around us.

Epictetus Enchiridion 5: “It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgements about them. So when we are frustrated, angry or unhappy, never blame anyone except ourselves – that is, our judgements. An ignorant person is inclined to blame others for his own misfortune. To blame oneself is proof of [moral] progress”.

For the Stoics, tranquility was a state of mind that arises only when we are able to accept life's circumstances with serenity and equanimity. But this process was not an easy task. Therefore, it was the task of the philosopher to correctly guide you through the process.

Socrates, the father of ethical philosophy, questioned both the political decisions and the social norms in Athens so much that he was known as “the gadfly of Athens.”
