Kicking off the week with a countdown to the biggest car-free celebration Athens has ever seen. To mark #WorldCarFreeDay, This is Athens - City Festival takes over Athinas Street this coming weekend turning it into a festival stage for 24 hours this coming weekend. Our street party begins on Saturday 8 pm and lasts until Sunday 8 pm, stretching from Ermou to Evripidou Streets. Aside from a short break in the early hours of Sunday, the day promises a virtually non-stop family-friendly celebration. 👨👩👧👦🎉
The day’s programme includes DJ sets, live music concerts, skateboarding, roller and scooter sessions, friendly races, bicycle workshops, silent film screenings, sunrise storytelling and much, much more. Embrace the car-free spirit and join us on foot or via public transport.

Well, not quite that swiftly, but jacaranda season in Athens only lasts a few weeks tops. So if you're in town at this time of year, or planning to visit, be sure to snap a photo of their purple splendour before they turn the city streets violet. The great Greek poet and Nobel Prize winner George Seferis said it best:
"Jacarandas playing castanets and dancing,
threw around their feet a violet snow."
As well as the Zappeion, which is the city's main stage for this late spring event, Rigillis Street also features these beautiful trees and is often overlooked by locals and visitors alike. Afterwards you can visit the wonderful Byzantine & Christian Museum Βυζαντινό και Χριστιανικό Μουσείο and Aristotle's Lyceum, both just off Rigillis.
