All crafted by hand:
The most significant musical instrument in Crete is the lyre, a three-dimensional bow and string instrument with its pear-shaped torso held in front of the body, placed on the knee, and played with a bow. The lyre's torso is crafted from a single piece of carefully selected white or black cedar wood.

The second classical instrument in Cretan folklore music is the bouzouki, available in six or eight sides. The smaller version is called the baglamas. Other instruments commonly used include the lute and the mandolin.

This statue of the dolphins 🐬 illustrates and image that was found on coins in the area of Rethymnon.

One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town: two dolphins in a circle. These animals gave the city its name.

The first evidence of human presence in the region dates back from around 1300 BC in the so-called post-Minoan period most notably through these Minoans centered at Kydonia, which is east of Rethymno.

Gold and silver coins have also been found, dating from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC and are proof that the ancient city “Rithymna” was already prospering at that time.

Enjoy the richness of the area by using this city walk through the VoiceMap app.

Kostis Giampoudakis
and the tragedy of Arkadi

The statue on the image is of Kostis Giampoudakis.
A Cretan hero, because he was the leading figure in the self-sacrifice action in the monastery of Arkadi on the 8th of November in 1866.

Arkadi, a monastery located south east of Rethymnon, served in those days as the headquarters of the Cretan rebellions during the start of the Great Cretan Revolution; a three-year uprising against Ottoman rule. It was the third and largest one in a series of revolts up until Crete was finally independent in 1898.

An army of 15.000 Ottoman soldiers with 30 cannons attacked the monastery, which held at that time 259 Cretan defenders and over 700 women and children. They had taken refuge in the monastery.

After three days of battle the Ottoman Turks had killed all rebels and had broken through into the monastery. The abbot Gabriel had no others choice than to give the orders to set the barrels of gunpowder present in the armoury on fire.

Kostis Giampoudakis received these orders and lit the barrels, giving a glorious death to the Greeks, as not to fall prisoners by the enemy.

You will pass the statue while scrolling through Rethymno, using the VoiceMap city walk.

Live from Rethymnon. Good to visit this lovely city.
The sun made the Venetian Loggia look even more beautiful.

And the food and friendliness in taverna Kyria Maria was again so fine.

When you on top of the Venetian Fortezza of Rethymnon one of the first things you will encounter is the Saint Elias Bastion. A demi-bastion at the south end of the fortress.

It contains the Erofyli open-air theatre, which was opened in 1993.

Most of the art and cultural events of the city take place here during the summer months. These activities aim to transform the city into a dynamic cultural centre, attracting visitors from different regions of Crete.

For sure worth a visit.

The VoiceMap city walk is made in a way that it’s your own decision to visit the Fortezza yes or no.

Up to you 😉

Maybe you wonder where this city walk with automatic GPS audio info starts…..

Decided was for an easy parking location close to the Venetian harbour.

Directions to starting point:

The starting point is the parking area next to the entrance of the new harbour. The street name is called Leofori Emmanouil Kefalogianni. If you come from the Heraklion area is the easiest to pass Rethymnon on the highway and drive around the city, so you avoid heavy traffic.

If you come by bus to Rethymno you can ‘join’ the city walk on another position in the tour, for example the one near the Municipal Garden. Except from the introduction words the tour will be the same.

Enjoy while walking. If you listen to the tour in a lazy position on your coach, it doesn’t matter where you start 😂

The minaret of Rethymnon was added to the adjacent mosque in 1890.
This mosque was originally constructed as a church by the Venetians dedicated to Santa Maria.
When Crete fell to the Turks in 1857, Gazi Hussein Pasha converted it into the Neratze mosque.

The building is nowadays used as the Municipal music conservatory or Odeon of Rethymnon and has held numerous musical performances at its premises.

Of course you will pass it if you use VoiceMap’s city tour made by AJ.
Available in English and Dutch.

Protomagia

While it’s also officially Labour Day, the first day of May on Crete is associated with the custom of Protomagia, a celebration of the awakening of nature after a long period of winter and dates back to Ancient Greece.

The month May was named after the Greek Goddess Maia, who was linked with the Ancient Roman goddess of fertility.

Many festivities take place in and around the cities and villages.

Many people traditionally go to the countryside for a picnic, to fly kites and gather wildflowers for a flower wreath called "Stefania" that people hang on the front doors of their houses to welcome spring.

This beautiful lighthouse was built in the 1800s by Egyptians. The harbour was already operating in the Byzantine period, but flourished during the Venetian period, particularly from the 1300’s on, after the silting problem was solved, a solution that still holds today.

Visit this lighthouse and make amazing pictures of the Old Venetian harbour of Rethymnon, while walking the guided city walk through Rethymnon.

Guided but still independent. You decide when to stop and when to walk. It’s all possible die to the VoiceMap app software.
Install the app via the Apple store or Google play and enjoy !!!
