Many times Arion Krini's guests ask ,how was the place before the villa was built .Was it an olive grove ? Or maybe a farm house? You will not guess it.........It was a threshing !What does this mean ?It was a place where a farmer would thresh the grain harvest ,the act of separating the grain from straw .
Pairs of either donkeys,oxen or horses would then be walked round and round, often dragging a heavy threshing board behind them, to tear the ears of grain from the stalks, and loosen the grain itself from the husks.
The construction was often in a high place, to take advantage of soft and steady winds to facilitate the work of winnowing separating the grain from the chaff, once the threshing had been completed.Today ,this breeze cools Arion Krini's guests the hot summer days !!!

Walking at Sunset on the beach in Rethymnon I met some people and Archelon volunteers with blue T-shirts. They were around a nest and they were observing some new-born sea -turtles caretta -caretta which ,after about two months of incubation and a few days of struggling to reach the nest’s surface ,they arrived on the surface this evening !
Think tiny baby turtles,each about 4,6 cm long and weighing 20 grams, which have just hatched from their nest!. After cracking the egg shells, the newborn turtles start their life’s most important journey. Relying on their DNA and their instinct, they are searching their destination towards the open sea, where they will live for the rest of their life. Imagine ,being just born and having to walk a marathon through desert with a lot of enemies around: crabs, seagulls, fish and human presence (even the city lights may disorient the young turtle
If they make it to the sea, the female ones will return to the same beach 20 years later to lay their own eggs!Unbelievable!!!!

The Mediterranean diet is known for being rich in high quality, extra virgin olive oil and olives .Olives make awesome appetizers ,snack between meals but also breakfast.
Curing green organic olives is one of our preparations for next season .We pick the green olives, variety Agrinion , from the tree every fall and we preserve them in jars .
It is like pickling the olives. Have you ever pickled vegetables at home? You know ,it is super easy! This recipe calls for a similar process. The recipe calls for water and salt only.You just need some patience because you need to wait many days,even months,but it’s worth every single day. Once their bitterness goes away we taste it.
Green olives are one of those homemade things we love prepair for our guests in Arion Krini Villa !

The Greek word for autumn, “ftinoporo”, is a difficult one and hard to remember. However, for those knowing Ancient Greek, it is easy to understand the etymology of the word: “φθινόπωρο”, comes from the Ancient Greek φθινόπωρον [phthinópōron] < φθίνω + οπώρα (fthino, to wither + opora, fruits) and so the word describes part of the natural phenomena during this season
