The tradition of Vasilopita and the lucky coin for a lucky New Year 💙🇬🇷
When we reflect on the holiday season, memories of New Year's Eve flood our mind, taking us back to our childhood... It was that time when all our loved ones would gather around the table to partake in a special tradition - the cutting of the Vasilopita, a cake with a hidden „flouri“ [Φλουρί in Greek], (lucky gold coin) inside. The thrill of uncovering the coin in our slice filled us with hope and excitement for the year ahead.
Each year, the tradition of sharing the Vasilopita still bring us together and create a sense of unity and good fortune. It is a moment that makes our mouths water and our hearts full of happiness. The tradition symbolizes the start of a new year filled with luck and prosperity, making it a cherished memory that we all hold dear.
Our tradition in detail:
The first part is baking a Vasilopita, with unforgetable smells to overwhelm the house.
The second and the most exciting part is when the household is taking over the process of cutting the Vasilopita cake, and they are crossing the cake three times:
The tradition involves cutting the cake and distributing slices according to a specific order. The first slice is dedicated to Jesus, the second to the Virgin Mary, the third to the house, the fourth to the business, and then one slice is given to each member of the family starting from the eldest, followed by slices for the guests.
As the slices are served one by one, the name of each recipient is announced. The room fills with anticipation as each person inspects their slice, hoping to find the hidden coin. Laughter echoes through the room as the search for the coin begins, and the joy is shared when the coin is discovered by two lucky individuals.
This heartwarming and interactive experience is a cherished tradition that brings good old-fashioned fun. It is eagerly anticipated each year by both the young and the young at heart.
Happy New Year everyone!!!
