The history of wine in Crete is as old as its culture. In Minoan Crete of the mid-second millennium BC, the wine was produced and stored in the palaces. Archaeological excavations brought to light numerous life-size pithos with traces of wine in them. Minoan wine was exported worldwide together with Cretan Olive Oil. In the ritual life of the Minoans, the wine was used for their sacred libations and the sacred bull of Crete was linked with the offerings in the form of the horn-shaped libation cups called ‘rhyta’.

With a population of over one million individuals, goats are at the center of Cretan life. Roaming freely in the green mountains, they offer a tender and soft meat for the unmissable antikristo lamb. Their milk is used to make the delicious feta or myzithra cheeses, and last but not least, they are absolutely adorable pets!

Have you ever noticed the drops running on the side of your glass of wine after you swirled it? These are called wine legs, tears or even cathedral arches, these droplets are actually a very good indicator to describe the wine at first sight. They are caused by the evaporation of alcohol and indicate either a high alcohol content, or the level of sweetness. The denser and slower the tears are running down the glass, the sweeter and/or more alcoholic the wine is.

A hardworking, loyal and faithful companion. The Cretan donkey is a small and intelligent donkey from the Mediterranean island of Crete. It has been used for centuries by Cretan farmers for a variety of tasks such as ploughing crops and carrying goods along the island’s rocky roads. However, more recently, the cretan donkey has gained popularity as an attractive yet hardworking pet.

The cretan donkey is a sturdy yet agile animal, with a thick neck and muscular body that helps it to travel across the rough terrain of Crete. Although they may appear stubborn to most, experienced handlers have learned to effectively use positive reinforcement training methods to effectively train them.

Despite their small size, the cretan donkey is a strong, hardy creature and is capable of packing long distances and heavy loads. With its steady gait, the cretan donkey is a pleasure.
