The oldest lighthouse in the world was...?

If you think of Alexandria in Egypt, you might be wrong, because 250 years earlier, the well known Persean Emporer Xerxes did fight in the waters around Skiathos. Three of the Persean ships sunk on a reef between Skiathos and the Pilion peninsular. After the incidents Xerxes ordered a stone tower to be build on the reef to protect ships in the future. Nowadays, there's still light on the rocks, that reach to 1-2 m depth.
Remains of the old Persean tower are on display in the courtyard of the Hellenic Naval Comand in Pireaus. A perfect chance to visit is - of course - to stay at Villa Pilion and rent a boat on a sunny day!
