The Dormition of Virgin Mary, celebrated on August 15th, is the most important summer Greek Christian holiday, also known as the “summer Easter”.

15th of August is a public Holiday in Greece , it is a day off for most of the population, when most of the shops , busnisses and offices are closed. On this special day, the Greeks celebrate their dear ones named Maria, Panagiota , Despina , Panagiotis . They go to the church in the morning and afterwords the restaurants and cafes are full of people celebrating this important holiday. On this special occasion, dozens of festivals and events are organized all over Greece.

Virgin Mary is probably the most beloved religious character in Greece.

There are many churches in Greece dedicated to Virgin Mary (in Greek language “Panagia”). On August 15th, many churches organize religious processions dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary , for pilgrims who come from all over Greece on this special holiday, when thousands of people gather for adoration of the icon of the Virgin Mary and walk in processions in her honour.
The workship of Virgin Mary , the Holy Mother of God, is spread all over Greece and people pray to Virgin Mary for protection and help . She is the Merciful, the Guide, the Healer, the Consoler and the Revelator, to name but a few of her names.

In ancient Greece, the month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, who was the deity of flowers and spring. The Greeks celebrated the arrival of spring with flower festivals, which often included the weaving of flower wreaths. These wreaths were worn on the head or hung on doors to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

The tradition continued in ancient Rome, where the festival of Floralia was held in honor of Flora. The festival lasted for several days, and people would wear bright colors and floral wreaths in their hair. They would also decorate their homes and public spaces with flowers and greenery.

Over time, the tradition of making flower wreaths on May Day spread throughout Europe, and it became associated with the arrival of spring and the renewal of life.
