The Most Fabulous Things to Do in Easter in Santorini!
The village known as Pyrgos (also Pyrgos Kallistis, meaning the most beautiful tower) in Santorini, is one of the island’s five castle cities. It was the capital of the island for a long time and remains a well-preserved area. The main reason to visit Pyrgos is to discover the way locals celebrate the most important festivity in the Orthodox calendar. Celebrating Easter in Santorini is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get a closer look at Greece’s deep beliefs and heartfelt religious celebration.
Easter in Greece is a serious business. It’s considered the most important liturgical moment of the year, even more than what Christmas represents in many other countries. Every region of Greece has unique traditions and rituals when it comes to Easter week. In this article, I want to concentrate only on the magnificent celebrations that take place during Easter in Santorini.
The beautiful village of Pyrgos is not on the coast of Santorini, so it’s not as popular as Oia, Fira, or even Akrotiri. Yet, during this moment of the year, Pyrgos becomes the center of attention on the island. It’s the place where everyone wants to attend Easter Celebrations on Good Friday.
On this day, the village displays one of the most impressive traditions in Greece. People come from every corner of the island, many of them with impressive photo equipment. On the other hand, villagers climb up the steep alleys of the village to reach one of the churches on top of the hill.
Easter Traditions
After the deposition of the Cross, starts the funeral procession of Jesus Christ at the footpaths of the village, just a few moments before, dozens of boys have gone around the village, carrying torch lighters to lighten up hundreds of aluminum cans placed in every house, rooftop, church, and path, as well as on the Venetian castle.

The atmosphere is magical. It is a thrilling experience to see the village glowing from the distance, with flickering flames giving light to the night.

The village glows as the procession of the body of Jesus (the Epitaph) begins, with thousands of people follow behind, holding candles and paper lanterns. Locals admit that this ceremony is not so much connected to religious beliefs, but it’s a tradition loved and long-awaited because of its beauty.

If you happen to be in Santorini during the Greek Easter, you can miss fireworks on Saturday night, you could even miss the tradition of a delicious roasted lamb on the spit on Easter Sunday. Yet, a visit to Pyrgos on Good Friday night is an experience you should not miss.

Others, instead, sit in open cafés and tavernas sharing coffees and conversation. Many more of them simply gather in the main square waiting for the ceremony to begin.

Sunset Semi-Private - Adonis
200€ / person
Cruise Details We depart from Athinios Port at 14:30 and we’ll cruise by the abandoned pumice stone mines and the old port of Santorini (under Fira town), mainly to allow for some great pictures to be taken. Then we continue towards Santorini’s Geo-park Nea Kameni. Arrival at the Nea Kameni volcano is scheduled at 15:00 and those who choose to do so can visit Santorini’s youngest, still active, volcano. Eugene, our host, will join you on your hike, providing you with a deeper understanding of the type of volcano Santorini really is and how the caldera was formed. Near the summit fumaroles are still emitting sulphuric gasses and temperatures at the surface exceed 90°C (194°F). The views from the volcano’s summit are absolutely breathtaking, offering a 360° view all around. It is quite a hike, so please come prepared, do not forget comfortable hiking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. . After approximate 1 hour and 30 we will return aboard the Adonis (depending on weather conditions and the guest that make up our group, we adapt, ensuring everybody’s safety and comfort). Guests, that would rather not visit the volcano, can opt to stay aboard the Adonis and cruise to one of the secluded Bays of Nea Kameni , for a refreshing dip in the waters. In case of any cardio-vascular or respiratory diseases it is not recommended to partake in this part of the excursion. At 16:30 we will reunite our group of passengers and head towards the hydro thermal springs of the Nea Kameni volcano, better known as the Hot Springs. We’re scheduled to reach the Hot Springs at 17:00. We’ll have one hour to our disposal to enjoy the springs, where temperatures can reach a delightful 56°C (132°F). We will provide transfer by dinghy for those would rather not swim the distance from the boat to the actual springs, as we cannot enter the springs by boat, due to the shallower waters there. Keep in mind that jewelry might tarnish, because of the high sulphide environment found at the springs. Do not forget a towel and preferably wear a dark bathing suit as the mud stains can be quite hard to wash out of your light colored swimming gear. In case of any cardio-vascular or respiratory diseases it is not recommended to partake in this part of the excursion. At 18:00 we depart and quickly pass from the warm springs of Palea Kameni, not to swim, as they are much less warm, but we will pass by because its picturesque setup makes for great photos. We will then make our way to the northern part of Santorini, alongside the cliffs perched with idyllic whitewashed villages. We would like to show you to northern most port of the island, Amoudi. With its red cliffs, on which we find Oia (Ia), known for its sunset and architecture. Then it’s off to Thirassia, the lovely little sister-island of Santorini. We’ll moor in the crystal clear waters at Korfos Bay (Thirassia) with its restaurants down at the waterside and its amazing views from the cliffs. It’s the undiscovered part of Santorini. We will have the opportunity for a quick dip in the sea, until dinner is served aboard the Adonis. At 18:45 we leave Thirassia and enjoy some sailing as we head into the sunset, enjoying a proper glass of wine, good company and romantic music… Make sure to carry something warm along, to cover yourselves after the sunset, as it tends to get chilly once the sun has set… After the sunset we return to Athinios Port, where we will be met by our drivers for a save return to your place of accommodation. In case of any cardio-vascular or respiratory diseases it is not recommended to partake in this part of the excursion. At 11:15 A.M. we depart and quickly pass from the warm springs of Palea Kameni, not to swim, as they are much less warm, but we will pass by because its picturesque setup makes for great photos. Then it’s off to Thirassia, the lovely little sister-island of Santorini. We will have the opportunity for a quick dip in the sea, until lunch is served aboard the Adonis. At 12:45 P.M. we’re scheduled to depart and make our way to the northern tip of Santorini, where we find Amoudi Bay with its Red cliffs, topped by some of the island most appraised architecture. A quick photo-shoot there, and then it’s time to enjoy some sailing. We’ll take advantage of the prevailing northern winds to take us back to the port of Athinios, having plenty of opportunities for pictures. We’re expected back at Athinios Port at 14:15, where transfer will be arranged for a safe return to your hotel
