Today we recorded a music ensemble based on an instrumental suite. (Original score by Ilias Velis. Very challenging because of the way they wanted to be captured. Video & audio at the same time, while the instruments placed in a semi circular shape.

Although quite close one another, the multichannel capture was all in all really good.

Hope that one day this session will be recorded in a more flexible way.

Αυτόν το δίσκο δεν πρόλαβα να τον επικοινωνήσω όπως ήθελα και νομίζω ήρθε η ώρα. Ένας δίσκος που μαζί με της @Ελένη Μπουσμαλή / Eleni Bousmali , "Εισαγωγικά & Παρενθέσεις" και του Νίκος Χρηστίδης, "Το Σύμπαν του Νίκου Χρηστίδη", Ξεκίνησαν δυναμικά, αλλά τρακάρανε πάνω σε πολύ δύσκολες μέρες για εμένα εκείνη την περίοδο. Τρεις δίσκοι που θα κυκλοφορούσαν σχεδόν παράλληλα, "δισκορπιστηκαν" στις ημερομηνίες τους, φθάνοντας στο 2024 όπου η "Ρίζα" του Παντελής Σπύρου κυκλοφορεί.

Και οι τρεις αυτοί δίσκοι ολοκληρώθηκαν μέσα από ένα διαφορετικό πρίσμα συνολικής προσέγγισης, κανοντάς τους μοναδικούς, όπως και κάθε πόνημα μουσικό.

Αξίζει να το ακούσετε και να το αγοράσετε διότι περιέχει ένα βιβλίο που δένει με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο τα τραγούδια αυτά.

The Complete Drum Recording Workshop
Κυριακή 31/3 στο Nvelope Recording Studio - Thessaloniki Greece και σε συνεργασία με τον Nikodemos Triaridis παρουσιάζουμε το απόλυτο drum recording workshop! Special guest στα drims, Alexis Makatselos και στον έξτρα εξοπλισμό το GIG ME UP .

Από την επιλογή οργάνου, χώρου και μικροφώνων στην τοποθέτηση, επεξεργασία και ηχογράφηση θα δούμε hands on και με λεπτομέρεια κάθε βήμα της διαδικασίας:

- Επιλογή και διαμόρφωση του drum kit ανάλογα με το ζητούμενο (μεγεθη, drumheads, tuning, muffling)
- Επιλογή και διαμόρφωση χώρου (live vs dead rooms, τοποθέτηση στον χώρο, διαχείριση ανακλάσεων κλπ)
- Επιλογή μικροφώνων (ποια και και γιατί, τύποι και επιλογές, πλεονεκτήματα και μειονεκτήματα)

Recording a string duet. This is for a new pop ballad song by . Although we didn’t have the luxury to record a quartet, the old school double process did the trick.

For this setup I used a pair of adx 51 in an ORTF format and two R-101 in AB 60cm apart for my main room sound. (Each will serve a different role in the production.

For the individual instruments, a classic 414 in hyper cardioid for the violin and a vintage .berlin TLM170 for the cello.

All signals passed through a vintage Allen & Heath mixer.

Recording the Santūr. A piano transcription for this instrument can be very tricky but the outcome paid off!

For this setup I used a pair of adx 51 in an ORTF format. Surprisingly, worked excellent keeping both transients and image in place. Though kind of brilliant, this helped a lot for the instrument to “cut through” the mix.

Christmas is almost here!!

DM me now and take advantage of the few last available dates before years end!

Recording, especially live sessions, is my passion ! If I had to choose between recording and mixing I would definitely ask for the former.

Although I like helping an artist reach the full potential of their work, and be a creative partner through the process, recording seems to always be the most important part of capturing the essence, inspiration and emotion of the moment. If this is combined with good musicians, then the result is guaranteed.

nVelope provides a comfortable environment, a naturally responsive room, plus a very good knowledge of how-to!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to record my beautiful Superstar birch played by Babis Petsinis for Δημήτρης Τσιβούλας-Dimitris Tsivoulas. Songs were straightforward but his grip and shot were amazing!! The drum set sung. The result was really good!

🎶 Recording sessions are always a blast, especially when you've got talented musicians bringing their good performance to the studio. Last night I had the pleasure of working with a lut player, guitarist, double bassist, and singer, and let me tell you, the sound they created together was truly magical.

I used a variety of high-quality microphones and pre-amps to capture every nuance of their performances.

For the lut, a Line Audio CM3 and a TLM170 fed a pair of AML 1073, which gave us a warm and natural sound that really brought out the instrument's character.

The guitar, a beautiful , was recorded using an XY Line Audio CM3 microphone setup, which allowed us to capture the full spectrum of its tonal range. These microphones passed through a pair of an old GS3 pres.

Meanwhile, the double bass was miked up with both an MD441 and a CM3, giving us a nice balance of clarity and richness in the low end. AEA RPQ500 helped a lot!

Last but not least, the singer used a Peluso P87, which is known for its smooth and vintage sound in the modern age. Combined with the instrumental performances, his voice really soared and added another layer of emotion to the recordings.

Overall, this was a fantastic recording session that produced some truly beautiful music. It's amazing what can happen when you bring together talented musicians and high-quality equipment to capture their artistry.

The past three days, the studio was full of the recordings of a new album. These are the people who played and spend hours behind the glass and the microphones! Smiling is the best reward for all of us, proving the outcome!!

Mainly five musicians recorded live, whereas others did a few solo overdubs, like a violin, baglama, trumpet etc.

The control room had a lot of different hardware patched in (pres, dynamics, effects) and most of the mixer’s channels were occupied.

Starting with the drums, a sparkle ✨Gretsch Catalina club jazz with coated heads and a typical setup. Different kinds of cymbals for shaping the overall tonality and a 14x8 snare for the big snap. Microphones that used for this: Sennheiser MD441, Shure Beta57A, LineAudio cm3, Peluso P87, Audix D series.

Next, the electric guitar, a part made Tele and a few pedals, fed a classic Vox NT15 with a 2x12” Celestion speakers. A MD421 on axis and a Xr1 off the cone edge. Warm mids an edgy highs.

The acoustic guitar, two to be exact, was treated with care while using a combo of an LDC & SDC for capturing the full body and neck. The Peluso 2247SE did the job, while the LineAudio cm3 added the transients back.

The piano is always the classic combo of a Royer R101 couple and an AEA pre-amp pair, although this time I used an ORTF higher above and approximately 1.5m away. This helps a lot when combined because it's easier to shape the sound between a quarter and a busy part of the song.

Last but not least, the bass was recorded using a DI at the control room, planning a re-amp later on. For adding a small flavor, the preamp used was an old A&H GS3, which when pushed creates a subtle saturation making it kind of interesting.

Last week I had the pleasure to record a quartet for an upcoming Radio & TV spot.

The placement is based on a semi circle pattern, where two musicians are at 90* and two at 45* with the vertical axis.

Most of the times this gives a very natural panorama and stereo image. Each instrument is “mic-ed” separately for a better management, and a main stereo pair is used for the main image.

The stereo pair is an ORTF, where all other microphones are cardioid SCDs

Recording acoustic guitar for an upcoming cover of ! Heart of the main sound is a Peluso 2247 feeding an preamp capturing the depth and warmth of the finger style performance.

For a slight stereo approach, a pair of Line Audio CM3’s in XY format did the job. These were fed into a pair of AML ez1073 where a 4dB boost was made to open up both ends.

Blending the two sources together resulted in a very robust sound with open sides.

Last night’s recording. Upright bass, folk guitar and a riq.

Lately, I found that using a MD441 & a Cm3 in combo in front of an UBass, gives me instantly the sound I need to cut-through the mix, retaining the tight lows, defined mids and detailed highs. Finding the sweet balance is easy using the faders.

On the other hand, combining a ribbon microphone r101 and a SDC on Riq results in a natural sound and detailed too.

Lastly, folk guitars (similar to small blues ones), tend to be kind of muddy in the mid-lows, so combining 2 microphones seems the best way to deal with it. On this day I used a vintage The Tube and a .berlin TLM103 pointing at the 12th fret.
