Handicraft and flea market in Sivas, Southern Crete.

On Sunday, October 20th, another event unfolded, featuring local talents like Linda Crast (painting), Richard LeMieux (fine art), Sabine Rassow (stone sculpture), and live music by the fantastic duo Vasilis Kaliampetsos and Sandy Dalziel. In the Metropolis of Mesaras, the largest basilica of Crete has been revealed through excavations. On Tuesday, September 24, 2024 between 10 am and 1 pm, a team of archaeologists will be there and will be happy to welcome visitors who are interested in getting to know the archaeological site.
In the relevant announcement we read: "Since 1991, the area of ​​the Metropolis has been the focus of joint archaeological research by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, the Italian School of Archeology of Athens and the University of Bologna. The first archaeological remains came to light during rescue excavations, the which revealed monumental remains attributed to a five-aisled basilica more than 60 meters long, with numerous secondary spaces and a monumental baptistery.
The field survey, carried out from 1991 to 2006, was followed by numerous expeditions to study the archaeological material until the start of new excavations this year, with the aim of expanding our knowledge about the monument.
