Kalamafka
A place of incomparable beauty, and at the same time one of the largest, most prosperous and historical villages of Ierapetra. The bare "meteor" rocks with the bonsai pines popping up where you do not expect it, the abundant waters, with the springs and the Kalamafkian river crossing along the village and the impressive gorge of Havgas gave Kalamafka the nickname of "Kin And this is just one element that the villagers can be proud of. Kalamafka is built at an altitude of 500 meters and has about as many other permanent residents. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agricultural work, while it is famous for its many taverns and local cuisine. It is believed that there was also the ancient city of Larissa, which flourished during the Minoan period and whose exact location causes headaches to researchers to this day. In the place Psathi, a little outside the settlement, findings have been found that reveal significant human activity. Rich sources have always been the element that gave Kalamafka its comparative advantage, and the reason that it has been inhabited continuously for thousands of years. From the area of Kefalovrysi, with the beautifully landscaped springs and the pine trees, the Kalamafkian river starts and crosses part of the settlement, offering a unique spectacle to those who want to cool off by visiting the taverns that run across its banks. Opposite the village stands the arrogant, 200 meters high massive and impressive rocky mass of Kastelos that was once the natural fortress of the settlement. After climbing 248 steps, is now the cave church of the Holy Cross, while the many ancient finds have officially characterized the peak as the Acropolis of ancient Larissa. At that point, inside the cave, a bronze figurine of Asclepius was found, which is now in an Oxford museum. The view from the top is unique with the plain of Ierapetra and the Libyan Sea on one side, and the whole village together with the mountains of Dikti on the other. Just outside of the village,it is the beginning of the path that leads to the gorge of Havgas. A place of unspeakable beauty, easily accessible, with its impressive rocks, the "small Meteora of Lassithi", as they have been named to beautify the vibrant vegetation for which the waters that flow to the plains take care. Scattered in various parts of the rocks are the fossils of shells and corals. Apart from the small church at the top of Kastellos, inside the village are the churches of Agios Antonios, patron saint of the village, with impressive wood carvings inside and special decoration on the outside door, while in Kastella just outside the settlement, are located the post-Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and Timios Stavros, with very remarkable frescoes.
