Discover Lefka Ori: The White Mountains of Crete

Lefka Ori, or the “White Mountains,” is a stunning mountain range located in western Crete, Greece. Known for its dramatic limestone peaks and snow-capped summits during winter, the name “Lefka Ori” comes from the bright, white appearance of its rocks and snow.

Highest Peak: Pachnes, standing at 2,453 meters (8,048 feet), is the second-highest peak in Crete, after Mount Ida.

Samaria Gorge, Crete📍

The Samaria Gorge is one of the most renowned natural landmarks in Crete and is located in the southwestern part of the island. It is part of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and runs through the Samaria National Park, a protected area known for its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes. The gorge spans approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) from its entrance at the Xyloskalo trailhead, near the Omalos Plateau, down to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea.

One of the gorge’s most iconic features is the “Iron Gates” (Sideroportes), a narrow passage where the cliffs stand just 4 meters (13 feet) apart and rise to heights of nearly 300 meters (984 feet). The trail is also home to a variety of endemic plant species and the Cretan wild goat, or kri-kri.

The Samaria Gorge has been a site of human activity for centuries, with remnants of ancient villages and a small chapel dedicated to Saint Mary (Samaria). Today, it attracts thousands of visitors each year as a premier hiking destination in Crete.
