Behind Mercado Central, on the outskirts of Antigua, you will find the imposing ruins of this 18th century Church and Monastery built by the Franciscan Recollects from 1701 – 1715. Their Church was one of the largest in the former capital of Guatemala. Sadly, ravaged by earthquakes and neglect, only a skeletal structure remains of this once sprawling spiritual center, but it’s well worth a visit when visiting Antigua.

The San Jerónimo ruins were once a magnificent two story complex, founded by the order of La Merced, to house their school. Construction began around the year 1739 and took approximately 20 years to complete. Sadly, after only two years from its opening, the school was forced to close, and was ordered to be demolished by Royal Decree because the Fathers had failed to obtain a building permit from the Crown. Fortunately, that order was rescinded and the structure would survive, later becoming the Royal Customhouse in 1765, containing living quarters for the customhouse officials, military, and their horses.

The entrance to the ruins of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago can be found behind and on the south side of the San José Cathedral. For a small entrance fee, you can explore the remains of the original church of Santiago that was completed in 1680 under the direction of Master Architect Joseph de Porras and Captain Martín de Andújar. The construction of Iglesia y Convento Santa Clara began in 1699, commissioned by the Franciscan order. It was established as a religious retreat for nuns belonging to the Order of Saint Clare, also known as the Poor Clares. The convent, founded by 3 nuns from Mexico and designed by architect Diego de Porres, used the Baroque architectural style that was prevalent during the colonial era, featuring elegant details and ornate facades that showcase the artistic craftsmanship of the time.
