SOS!!!!!!
Dear amazing group of people,
I don’t often plead or beg, but today I make an exception. And I don’t know of a better support group to lean on. After all, you have all experienced it.
Today I called Karen, the leader of the children’s home Hogar Miguel Magone in Guatemala, to speak about the video I am making for a fundraising event in April, and much to my surprise, a usual short conversation turned in to quite the venting session for Karen. She is usually smiling and upbeat. But today she sounded tired and hopeless. In her own words she explained, “Nothing is going right.”
She has been sick for the past 2 weeks, and hasn’t been able to go to the doctor. Now the court hearings for each child have to happen every ten days, which if multiplied by how many children there are turns out to be constant court hearings. Estuardo is having to leave his house every morning to pick up the first round of children at 4 am, and then throughout the day they send taxis back and forth with the next groups. They have been spending a lot on taxis recently, as one of their 2 vans is out of commission with engine problems. On top of this, for one of the family of children in hearings currently, Karen is having to pay Q15,000.00 (About US$2,000) in paperwork. She literally cried as she told be that “Children can’t eat paperwork.”
She explained that all of these expenses have come at once. One little girl is needing eye surgery, but to get the surgery she has to obviously undergo many tests and labs, which are expensive here in Guatemala. Karen also recently accepted a 1 ½ year old little girl who had nowhere else to go. This means special food, diapers, and care. And, to make maters worse, the home spent the equivalent of US$1,000.00 this month on water alone.
As you know, Easter break is approaching. In the past, Karen has been able to let the teachers have breaks in shifts over this vacation week. But because of so many hearings, she can’t this year. The teachers must work straight through. But because they are national holidays, she must pay the teachers double their salary.
In my eyes, Karen is a saint. But it appears as though she is human. All humans have their breaking point. I want to make sure she doesn’t reach it… but I need your help. I was speechless as she spoke. I can’t fix anything with my words. Words can only do so much.
I am sending out an SOS to every single person in my life. This home does so much, not for Guatemala alone, but for the world. And they need us. I know you have given so much already, shoes and uniforms, time and love. But the home is bleeding expenses now, and I know we can help. If I ask everyone I know, and you ask everyone you know… we can raise the money to get them out of this hole that they are stuck in.
Celebrate Children International is the company in the US that sends tax deductible donations straight down to Karen. They have allowed me to do an emergency fund for this crisis. We have 2 weeks to raise as much money as we can, and then Vantage Point Guatemala will be covering the costs of the wire transfer so that funds are available for Karen immediately. Usually the checks are sent every 2 months, and take about a month to clear. Celebrate Children International is helping me out a great deal by allowing us to send an emergency sum down. They also will give IRS tax deduction forms at the end of the year for any donation of $250 or more.
For any donations under $250, which I hope there are many, below are options of how to donate. I am pleading for you to share this with your friends and family. Every little bit helps. Let’s show Karen she’s not alone. I can’t bear her tears.
Love to all,
Danielle Weaver
