Linden is Guyana’s second most populated town located 65 miles up the River Demerara with an area of 142 square kilometers and a population of about 35,000. The main economic activity for over a century is bauxite production, which has indelibly left its mark on the community.
A visit to Linden takes us via the East Bank Demerara Highway through the foremost part of the Hilly Sand & Clay Belt which is rich in Quartz Sand and other valuable minerals. From Amelia’s Waard in the northern hills through Kara Kara, Rainbow City, Retrieve, Cocatara, the Industrial Area, Speightland, Watooka, Fairsrust, and Richmond Hill in the south on the right bank of the river, then on the left bank to Old England, Canvas City, Silvertown, Half-Mile, One Mile and beyond, Wismar Housing Scheme, Victory Valley and Christiansburg with its peculiar Alleys surrounded by D’Anjou and Blueberry Hills.
Every Ward of the three main communities of Mackenzie, Wismar, and Christiansburg that comprise the Town of Linden has their individual story. The Town is expanding despite bauxite production has dwindled to about one-sixth of production figures of the 1960s.
No other area of Guyana has a claim to the unique culture and social development of the Town of Linden. See the now-defunct Alumina Plant, the Bauxite Plant, the Blue Lake, and the once-forbidden areas of Mackenzie among many other places of interest.

Santa Aratack also known as Santa Mission is the closest Indigenous Community to Georgetown. Its approximately Three Hundred and Sixty inhabitants are mainly Arawacks; very friendly and hospitable. The community is situated about Fourteen Miles up the Kamuni Creek adjacent to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in the River Demerara. The community offers an introduction to the rainforest and a good insight into the lifestyle of Guyana's First Peoples. We get there via a Twenty-five-mile bus ride, followed by a serene boat ride to the edge of the jungle, where, occasional sightings of exotic birds and animals add to the beauty of the place. It's also a lovely place for a dip in the Kamuni's Cola-coloured water.
