Maybe one of my favorite images from Tonga this summer.

The humpbacks just lazily sleep there all summer, and a common rythm is to go down to 15m and then slowly rise steadily to the surface over the course of 20min. Sometimes they rise up nose first, head first or tail first, like here

Meet our son Maxwell Leo Lorenz. .moments and I are delighted about his arrival just before Christmas, on the 23rd of December 2024. Never having had success while trying for a baby we were surprised by getting pregnant... without trying.
Our adopted son Kai is excited about his baby brother while our animals can sense they have moved further down in the priority list.

Merry Xmas to all of you and good start to the next year. You can rest assured it will be less stressful than ours :-)

Because I was asked to speak about sharks at several highschools this month I finally fulfilled a dream of owning a real shark jaw. I always talk about the shark teeth, their endless replenishment and amazing serration. And now kids can actually see and touch that.

My guest Christina got an amazing swim-by with a large humpback.

The whales just popped up everywhere that day. In this case right next to Christina and me.

There were maybe 40 Orcas and 20 humpbacks. Everyone was feeding deep so we didnt get to see the shoals but on the plus side the whales needed to catch their breath and there was no scale mess at the surface

Yesterday was a cracker of a day as we got close to Humpback feeding in a deep baitball

There were maybe 40 Orcas and 20 humpbacks. Everyone was feeding deep so we didnt get to see the shoals but on the plus side the whales needed to catch their breath and there was no scale mess at the surface

This is what it feels like when a sperm whale comes in for close inspection. Their eyes are 1-2m back so they either look at you from the side or they "click" you by making their unique sounds and receiving a 3D image back of yoh. When people ask why you should swim with sperm whales in Dominica, this is why. The resident pods are used to swimmers here and because of a strict permit system and dilligent operators no one is annoying the whales. As a result they are relaxed around us. You have never been closer to being eaten by a whale LAST MINUTE CANCELLATION - SINGLE ROOM 9th NOVEMBER WITH DISCOUNT This is still my craziest ocean experience to date. I was photographing at bait ball with 50+ orcas in Northern Norway when these two giant Fin Whales shot towards me - giant mouth ajar trying to capture as much herring as possible. This whale can reach 27m and is just a tiny bit smaller than the Blue Whale - but so much cooler You can see they actually turn to avoid me. Even though balleen whales are said to not have forward echolocation I am sure science will disprove this soon. Heading back there in less than a month, can’t wait!!
