Guided Watercolour Classes

Have you ever wanted to try watercolour painting? Been intimidated by the sketching, all the colour choices and how to start the process? This one off class will let you dip your toes into watercolour without commitment!

There are three sessions available at Lambton Heritage Museum in July. Each session participants are welcome to try a different image.

Sign up for an individual session or all three!

Tuesday 18, 10am - 12 pm
Saturday 15, 2 - 4 pm
Thursday 20 6 - 8 pm

All materials are provided. Classes will be 35$ per person, children 10+ and adults of all ages welcome.

The community garden has some splendid echinacea flowers. The bees appreciated them even more than I do!

The trekkers had a look at the to***co hornworms legs and prolegs to see what the differences were. We found out that the parts that make the prolegs super sticky are called crochets and are actually teeny tiny hooks! They also have enormous round poos. Bugs are certainly nifty!

All the trekkers gathered around to check out this lovely to***co hornworm we found munching on some tomato plants. It was very keen on N, but decided she did not taste like a tomato plant.

A tomato worm - or to be more precise, a to***co hornworm (Manfuca sexta) stopped by to say hello. These huge caterpillars spend their time munching up a tremendous amount of foliage before pupating and transforming into Carolina sphinx moths. The trekkers had fun playing around with this large lumbering specimen!

We just couldn’t get enough of the salt crystals from the mine. It was just such a cool chunk - this salt is processed for everything from road salt to table salt. It is the worlds largest underground mine, and extends for 7 square km under Lake Huron. We were told that tools don’t rust when they are down in the mine until they are brought back to the surface! All in all it’s a really amazing thing!

N and L explored the salt crystal - Helen asked them if they licked it and at first they said no, but then admitted to having a try. All the trekkers tried a luck when they thought no one was looking…

The trekkers enjoyed playing on the giant salt crystal from the mine - what an interesting thing to see and to hear about! Ancient seas retreated from the leaving behind huge depressions that have become our Great Lakes. Just thinking about the geological scale makes our heads spin!

The trekkers may LOOK like they are standing on a block of ice… but it’s actually SALT! We stopped by to see a very interesting guy who works in the Goderich salt mines. He told us about how the ancient seas left salt deposits underground and how they mine it and refine it for various purposes! Such nifty things!

Godrich has a famous salt mine, where the salt from long ago seas is pulled from under the rocks. If you are in Ontario and use Sifto salt, it probably came from Godrich!

Trudy found a nice bench to chill on at the Goderich boardwalk.

There is a bit of sandy beach here but the trekkers decided to hang out on the rocks for a bit, soaking up the summer!

Isn’t this an amazing willow tree? The trekkers and I spotted it on the shores of the lovely town of Godrich. We thought it would make the perfect witch’s tree, except it’s on the sunny lakefront so it has the wrong atmosphere.

Trudy and Helen thought the soap was pretty wonderful. Made with goat milk, it leaves your skin soft and clean!

N and O found this metal goat and thought it looked fun to crawl on! It was next to a stand selling soap made from goat milk!

If you are not a farmer, and you watch a parade in a rural district, you might be forgiven for thinking it’s an implement of danger parade. For any farmers or farm adjacent people though, it is normal to have giant blades and scoops and pokey things attached to your vehicle.

The trekkers were impressed with the number of tractors! Most of the old tractors we saw were red which was meant to make them safer to drive on the road and easier to see when working in the fields!

Country fairs often have competitions - this one is calling for sign ups for the arm wrestling competition!

The trekkers learned that in a farming community, the parade has a LOT of tractors! The tractors we saw were spiffed up though!

This is the most Canadian moment the trekkers have had so far. Watching a small town parade in the summer sun, while a Zamboni (that’s the machine that cleans and levels the ice on ice rinks) goes by. The Zamboni is tagged with the logo of a hockey team - the Montreal Canadiens.

N loved the splash pad! These have popped up in many places and they are really awesome! This one is in Parkhill, which also has a skatepark and frisbee golf!
