Each year, the graduating class of the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Program participates in a significant tradition: voting for their favorite faculty member. This coveted award recognizes the exceptional teaching required for the world’s No.1 EMBA, where seasoned executives come together from various corners of the world to explore the fast-paced world of international business.

During this year's graduation ceremony, we are thrilled to celebrate the extraordinary achievement of Prof. Milind Rao, HKUST Adjunct Professor of Economics, who has clinched the Best Faculty of the Year Award for an unprecedented 8th time!

Winning the Best Faculty of the Year Award is no small accomplishment, especially when competing against a pool of exceptional educators. Upon receiving this prestigious award, Prof. Rao holds true to the high-impact, low-ego culture of the KH program and humbly attributes his success to his students, “I’m an average teacher, but in a classroom filled with outstanding individuals, they transformed me and brought out the best in me.”

Prof. Rao's two thought-provoking and impactful courses - one on Global Macroeconomics and the other a global elective on Value Investing - are highly sought-after among students. Allan Zhang, CEO of Shui On Xintiandi and class ambassador of the Class of 2024, speaks highly of Prof. Rao's teaching prowess, "Navigating today's intricate global context, macroeconomics is an important but complex topic. Yet, Prof. Rao's captivating lectures and engaging interactions really draw us in. Step by step, he leads us to uncover the driving forces and patterns in a complex economic landscape. It was indeed an enlightening and unforgettable learning experience."

As we celebrate Prof. Rao's outstanding achievement, we are reminded of the immense value that exceptional faculty bring to the KH program. Their dedication to academic excellence and their ability to inspire executives to become transformative global business leaders make the program a powerful platform for growth and success.

Each graduate of the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program set out on their path driven by a shared objective of change. Whether it's seeking faster career growth, switching professions, or driving innovation, distance is no match for their thirst for a World-Class education.

In the graduating class of 2024, an impressive 57% of students, including class ambassadors Cathy Liu and Nihat Ercan, made the commitment to fly to Hong Kong for in-person classes.

Cathy, Vice President of Strategic Partnership at iKang Healthcare Group, joined the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Program with a strong motivation to advance her career, even though it meant she had to leave her home in Shanghai for two consecutive weekends every month to attend classes in Hong Kong. Cathy shares, "The program topped the chart as the world's No. 1 EMBA program, and its curriculum stood out to me for being intense, forward-looking, and thorough."

She elaborates her decision further, stating, "Kellogg-HKUST sets the perfect stage for an international cohort of leaders, united by the same value of 'high-impact, low-ego,' to explore new horizons and to inspire transformative leadership across borders." The 18-month program, structured around in-person teaching over long weekends, proved to be the perfect fit for her ambitious goals.

Meanwhile, Nihat, currently serving as CEO and leading the APAC team at JJL Hotels & Hospitality Group in Singapore, recognizes the need for broader general management capabilities. Reflecting on his experience, he shares, "Kellogg-HKUST's global network and diverse study options enable me to connect with ‘high-impact, low-ego’ leaders across various industries, in turn broadening my own professional horizons."

Coming from an international background, both in his personal life and professional endeavors, Nihat considered cultural diversity as a pivotal factor in selecting an EMBA program. He sought a program that resonated with his values and found it in Kellogg-HKUST.

The Kellogg-HKUST community gathers executives from all walks of life, all guided by the same passion, grit, and resilience. Throughout the past 18 months, the graduates have supported one another through countless sleepless nights, overcome challenges and celebrated triumphs. As this chapter of their educational journey draws to a close, they will carry with them the newfound knowledge and cherished bonds of lifelong friendships, ready to carve their paths to success.

"While it is wise to learn from experience, it is wiser to learn from the experiences of others.“

The CEO Speaker Series offers a unique platform for our Kellogg-HKUST EMBA students to connect with accomplished industry leaders, fostering the exchange of insights, expertise, and invaluable lessons derived from real-life experiences. During one of our sessions held in May, the KH classroom welcomed Mr. Gregory Van, CEO of Endowus, an independent fee-only wealth and fund platform based in Singapore.

Through an enlightening conversation with Krista Cruz Lucero, a student from KH27 (Class of 2025), Mr. Van walked us through his entrepreneurial journey and discussed his mission of making investing accessible and fairer for all. He empowered us with investment strategies and guided us through the challenges faced by everyday investors.

Students actively engaged by asking questions and sharing their perspectives, fostering a dynamic learning environment in the KH EMBA classroom. It was very rewarding to witness the impactful interactions among participants, which created an enriching experience that deepened their collective knowledge and understanding.

AI in Healthcare: Friend or Foe to Doctors?

While AI can analyze medical scans, predict treatment plans, and spot diseases, patients still yearn for the human touch. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are qualities that AI can't replicate. Some studies show AI outperforming doctors, while others suggest a partnership between human expertise and AI is the winning combo.

Discover more in this article by Kellogg Professor of Strategy, Craig Garthwaite, who was just in Hong Kong in May to teach KH27 (Class of 2025) their "Foundations for Strategy Formulation" course: https://insight.kellogg.northwestern.edu/article/will-ai-replace-doctors?token=thh9AM2utid-hRE1zODrynwPRNk1pMQC&utm_source=subscriber&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Weekly061624&pnespid=qqNlDz0dNvxGiqPD.mvkSY3Wvwu.CZYpM_q8xfFloBhmyWySv6B7S3X4y8R1HPMs_SV4wRr8xQ

Maybe not entirely. But the doctor–patient relationship is likely to change dramatically.

Just last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Oliver Weisberg, CEO of Blue Pool Capital, to the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA classroom. During this fireside chat with our student, Yvonne Cheung from KH27 (Class of 2025), Mr. Weisberg provided our class of senior executives with a history of Blue Pool Capital, a multi-strategy investment firm based in Hong Kong. Moreover, he imparted personal advice and shared his own experiences, including his dual role as the leader of both the Blue Pool Fund and the Sports assets. The conversation explored the essential success factors in building a winning team, while highlighting the distinctions between managing an investment business and a sports team.

Attending the CEO Speaker Series is always rewarding, as it fosters the exchange of knowledge and offers insights from the practical world, supported by real-life examples. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Weisberg for taking the time to join us on a module weekend and graciously sharing his work experiences and words of wisdom with our students.

🌸 Mother’s Day Celebration 🌸

On this special occasion of Mother's Day, we raise our glasses to the remarkable "superwomen" of the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA program. Many of our female students are working mothers who gracefully balance the demands of motherhood, career, and education.

As they pursue personal growth and career development, these extraordinary women have embraced the challenging journey of pursuing an EMBA. They serve as inspiring examples, demonstrating that no obstacle is too big when it comes to achieving their goals. Juggling multiple roles is far from easy, but they show us that being a mother does not hinder us from accomplishing anything we set our minds to.

Cheers to these incredible KH27 mums who spend this day studying "Foundation for Strategy Formulation" on campus. They embody the spirit of determination and resilience, inspiring us all to strive for greatness.
