We had the privilege of hosting Mr. Franz Wu, the CEO, Chairman, and Co-Founder of YOHO, for an engaging fireside chat as part of our CEO Speaker Series.

Mr. Wu shared with us his remarkable entrepreneurial journey, which began during the 2008 financial crisis when he started trading and distributing consumer electronics and home appliances. He shared that he has a humble background and started his own business without any support. In 2013, recognizing the growing demand for enhanced shopping convenience, Mr. Wu took a leap of faith and co-founded YOHO.

Today, YOHO stands tall as the leading e-commerce platform specializing in consumer electronics and home appliances in Hong Kong, achieving a milestone with its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2022.

Venturing into entrepreneurship right after graduation was far from easy, and Mr. Wu candidly discussed the hurdles he encountered while steering a business through turbulent times. He also shed light on the introduction and implementation of an inventive online-merge-offline (OMO) business model in Hong Kong, a development that later revolutionized the e-commerce industry.

Humble and down-to-earth, Mr. Wu also talked about the challenges he is currently facing. His experiences and advice offered practical insights applicable to the daily work and lives of our students, who themselves hold senior executive positions. It was rewarding to witness how the conversation flourished, enriched by the diverse perspectives of both Mr. Wu and the audience, fostering an engaging and interactive learning space!

Upon their graduation, KH26 (Class of 2024) demonstrated a remarkable commitment to giving back by raising HKD 262,000 in support of ImpactHK, a local NGO. This effort not only highlights their dedication to creating positive change but also resonates with the "High Impact Low Ego" ethos of our KH alumni and students.

The funds raised will support ImpactHK’s mission to create an inclusive Hong Kong where every individual finds a place to call home. Beyond addressing immediate needs like meals and shelter, the contribution will extend to crucial services such as job training, employment referrals, counseling, and community empowerment.

This effort is more than just a donation, it shows a shared commitment to giving back to society. Our alumni are sowing the seeds for lasting change and sustainable progress in the lives of those in need.🌱

For new CEOs, building a constructive relationship with their board of directors presents a unique challenge, particularly when board members have limited experience within the company or industry.

Well-known to our students for his course "Leading a Global Company" at Kellogg-HKUST, Kellogg Professor Harry Kraemer, who previously served as CEO of Baxter International (and member of more than 20 boards), offers a four-step process to positive CEO–board relationships.

The representation of different backgrounds in leadership remains a challenge in today's organizations. How can we enhance diversity and inclusivity in leadership roles to better reflect our communities?

In collaboration with Michael Page Japan, we recently organized a breakfast event in Tokyo, themed around “Balancing Education, Career, and Life: A Woman's Leadership Journey”. The session covered topics such as the hurdles faced by female executives in balancing their professional responsibilities with personal life and family commitments.

Moderated by Mr. Josh Carne, Director at Michael Page, the panel discussion featured Ms. Faye Pan, Manager of the Sales Team at Michael Page, Ms. Yuki Miura, a Kellogg-HKUST EMBA alumna, and our Program Director, Ms. Judy Au.

Insights shared during the event were particularly enlightening!

💡Faye provided valuable perspectives on industry trends in the Japanese labor market and female leadership from an executive search standpoint.

💡Judy emphasized the impact of role models in advancing women's careers and the significance of education in shaping female leaders - highlighting how further education is a precious gift to oneself.

💡Yuki, drawing from her experiences as a program alumna, offered reflections on navigating the delicate balance between career ambitions and personal life.

As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the journey towards nurturing the next generation of female leaders is an ongoing process. A special thank you to Michael Page for the engaging discussions that have helped to foster a more inclusive and diverse leadership landscape!

How does the dynamic energy of a city like Hong Kong influence the personal and professional decisions of senior executives?

Three years ago, Michael Yue (Class of 2018), Managing Director and GM of Google Hong Kong, made a daring transition from Google Singapore to Hong Kong, initially expecting a temporary stay. However, before they knew it, both he and his wife had fallen in love with the captivating blend of vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and dynamic lifestyle that the city has to offer. Embracing Hong Kong as a bustling hub for global perspectives, business opportunities, and cultural richness, they have now decided to make this lively metropolis their permanent home!
