The World is Your Classroom🧑🏼‍🤝‍🧑🏻🌎🧑🏿‍🤝‍🧑🏽

The recent conclusion of the Global Network Week was marked by the participation of over 140 senior executives from the partner schools in Evanston, Chicago, Toronto, Vallendar, Beijing, and Hong Kong at the Kellogg campus in Evanston.

In addition to learning Negotiation Strategies with Prof. Nicholas Pearce and Strategic Crisis Management with Prof. Tim Feddersen, the global classroom experience went beyond textbooks. KH + KH = KH Alumni Power!

Recently, two of our Kellogg-HKUST alumni, Cammy Yiu (Class of 2000) and Vincent Wu (Class of 2024) powered up the KH alumni network by collaborating on a spectacular evening event at CVIEW on the 16th floor of the M+ building.

The event, COLLECTORS Masterclass, is part of Vincent’s CURATOR Masterclass series hosted at his gorgeously designed premium Chinese dining venue with a panoramic view of Victoria Harbour.

In partnership with Asia Art Hong Kong, the evening talk featured renowned collector Chris Hall, a prominent figure in the art and textile community, who shared his insights and awareness of the importance of preserving this unique aspect of China's cultural legacy.

Cammy assisted with the promotion of the event through social media and was the official media partner through her publication CULTURE magazine.

Our KH alumni gave a boost to the evening and enjoyed the networking opportunity over a pre-lecture session of cocktails and beautifully prepared canapes.

Here are some highlights from the event!

Negotiations are a common occurrence, whether at work or in your personal life. How can you become a better negotiator when securing a "yes" seems challenging?

Next week, some of our current students are set to refine their negotiation skills and strategies with Prof. Thompson during their Global Network Week in Evanston.

You can also enhance your negotiation toolkit by understanding the dos and don'ts of leveraging your BATNA effectively for successful negotiation outcomes! Read more:

The biggest risk is not taking any risk.

“If you really want to change paradigms, you must be willing to encourage people to come up with ideas that might make the organization uncomfortable.” In this article, Kellogg Professor, David Schonthal, elaborates on the key aspects of fostering true innovation and provides useful tips for sparking and sustaining group innovation.

Within the classroom, Professor Schonthal pushes the boundaries of creativity further. Through his course "New Venture Discovery" at Kellogg-HKUST, he encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and explore the busy streets of Hong Kong's Central district. Here, they challenge their assumptions by pitching business models to real customers and stakeholders in a practical setting. While one might feel uneasy approaching strangers with their ideas, this exercise proves instrumental in cultivating fresh, or even better, viewpoints.

Read more to understand why innovation requires an environment of creative risk: https://insight.kellogg.northwestern.edu/article/innovation-requires-an-environment-of-creative-risk #:~:text=True%20innovation%20requires%20not%20just,provide%2C%20as%20countless%20articles%20describe

If you really want to change paradigms, you must be willing to accept that there is no such thing as true innovation without risk.

Exploring Tech Marvels in Shenzhen 🤖

Our alumni recently ventured into the heart of BYD in Shenzhen. As a key player in China's industrial landscape and known for its multifaceted offerings across electronics, sustainable energy solutions, and rail transit advancements, BYD graciously hosted us for an enlightening visit.

During our time there, we explored the company's cutting-edge intelligent products and the revolutionary iTAC (Intelligent Torque Adaption Control) technology. In addition to these technical insights, our alumni also took a glimpse into BYD's strategic branding initiatives and had the privilege of experiencing the futuristic Skyshuttle.

Innovation isn't just about what you find in textbooks; it's about immersing yourself in the real world. Such company visits resonate with our ethos of lifelong learning and exemplify the impact of experiential learning. We are all about extending learning beyond the classroom, ensuring that our alumni and current students always remain in touch with the latest trends and continuously seek out new perspectives.

Each year, the graduating class of the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Program participates in a significant tradition: voting for their favorite faculty member. This coveted award recognizes the exceptional teaching required for the world’s No.1 EMBA, where seasoned executives come together from various corners of the world to explore the fast-paced world of international business.

During this year's graduation ceremony, we are thrilled to celebrate the extraordinary achievement of Prof. Milind Rao, HKUST Adjunct Professor of Economics, who has clinched the Best Faculty of the Year Award for an unprecedented 8th time!

Winning the Best Faculty of the Year Award is no small accomplishment, especially when competing against a pool of exceptional educators. Upon receiving this prestigious award, Prof. Rao holds true to the high-impact, low-ego culture of the KH program and humbly attributes his success to his students, “I’m an average teacher, but in a classroom filled with outstanding individuals, they transformed me and brought out the best in me.”

Prof. Rao's two thought-provoking and impactful courses - one on Global Macroeconomics and the other a global elective on Value Investing - are highly sought-after among students. Allan Zhang, CEO of Shui On Xintiandi and class ambassador of the Class of 2024, speaks highly of Prof. Rao's teaching prowess, "Navigating today's intricate global context, macroeconomics is an important but complex topic. Yet, Prof. Rao's captivating lectures and engaging interactions really draw us in. Step by step, he leads us to uncover the driving forces and patterns in a complex economic landscape. It was indeed an enlightening and unforgettable learning experience."

As we celebrate Prof. Rao's outstanding achievement, we are reminded of the immense value that exceptional faculty bring to the KH program. Their dedication to academic excellence and their ability to inspire executives to become transformative global business leaders make the program a powerful platform for growth and success.

Each graduate of the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program set out on their path driven by a shared objective of change. Whether it's seeking faster career growth, switching professions, or driving innovation, distance is no match for their thirst for a World-Class education.

In the graduating class of 2024, an impressive 57% of students, including class ambassadors Cathy Liu and Nihat Ercan, made the commitment to fly to Hong Kong for in-person classes.

Cathy, Vice President of Strategic Partnership at iKang Healthcare Group, joined the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA Program with a strong motivation to advance her career, even though it meant she had to leave her home in Shanghai for two consecutive weekends every month to attend classes in Hong Kong. Cathy shares, "The program topped the chart as the world's No. 1 EMBA program, and its curriculum stood out to me for being intense, forward-looking, and thorough."

She elaborates her decision further, stating, "Kellogg-HKUST sets the perfect stage for an international cohort of leaders, united by the same value of 'high-impact, low-ego,' to explore new horizons and to inspire transformative leadership across borders." The 18-month program, structured around in-person teaching over long weekends, proved to be the perfect fit for her ambitious goals.

Meanwhile, Nihat, currently serving as CEO and leading the APAC team at JJL Hotels & Hospitality Group in Singapore, recognizes the need for broader general management capabilities. Reflecting on his experience, he shares, "Kellogg-HKUST's global network and diverse study options enable me to connect with ‘high-impact, low-ego’ leaders across various industries, in turn broadening my own professional horizons."

Coming from an international background, both in his personal life and professional endeavors, Nihat considered cultural diversity as a pivotal factor in selecting an EMBA program. He sought a program that resonated with his values and found it in Kellogg-HKUST.

The Kellogg-HKUST community gathers executives from all walks of life, all guided by the same passion, grit, and resilience. Throughout the past 18 months, the graduates have supported one another through countless sleepless nights, overcome challenges and celebrated triumphs. As this chapter of their educational journey draws to a close, they will carry with them the newfound knowledge and cherished bonds of lifelong friendships, ready to carve their paths to success.
