For those of you that have cruised to Mahogany Bay in Dixon Cove, Roatan, Honduras and wondered about the partially sunken ship. Here is my understanding. It is the cargo ship M Alexand and was built in Germany in 1951. Ownership transferred to Israel as war reparations and named Rimon. It was sold and renamed 3 additional times before being purchased by a Honduran cement company in 1977 and renamed M Alexand.

In 1981 it was headed to Ecuador with 300K sacks of cement but experienced mechanical issues and limped to Roatan. Due to broken pipes about 2K sacks of cement at the bottom layer were ruined, the cargo was removed. To protect the ship during hurricane season it was towed and beached at her current location which at that time was just an uninhabited mangrove.

Repairs were planned but never completed when the 50-million-dollar expansion project for the cement company pending government approval didn’t go through because the new Honduran President elected in 1982 had other plans for Honduras. In retaliation the owner of the cement company tried to have the president assassinated and was subsequently jailed. The cement company went bankrupt and the M Alexand remained beached.

Due to neglect and lack of repair her back end took on water and sank about 60 to 70 feet. Then over time people would come at night and steal metal off of her to sell for scrap.
