This was a wonderful experience! walking through a dense, lush rainforest filled with the soothing sounds of rustling leaves and chirping birds, something catches your eye in the distance. Through the branches, you catch a glimpse of vibrant colors unlike any bird you’ve ever seen before. Intrigued, you move closer, your heart pounding with excitement.

The Santa Marta Sabrewing had not had a documented sighting since 2010, but since it was unexpectedly rediscovered by researchers in 2022, they have been able to learn more about this mysterious species.
A team has been working with local Indigenous communities and found a population of this hummingbird in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a mountain range in Colombia.
My organization Re:wild and their partners SELVA Investigación para la Conservación en el Neotrópico, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Procat Colombia - Proyecto de Conservación de Aguas y Tierras, American Bird Conservancy, and World Parrot Trust have released new findings about the geographic distribution, local abundance, behavior, and ecology of this mysterious hummingbird. They are also working with local and Indigenous communities to design effective conservation strategies for the species.
