BIRDING BELIZE, 2025!

With a diversity of over 574 species of birds, the nation of Belize is a favorite Central American destination among birders and nature lovers. To its east, the massive Belize Barrier Reef, dotted with hundreds of low-lying cays, hosts some of the richest marine life in the Caribbean. To the west, Belize’s dry, pine, and rain forest areas are home to Mayan ruins like Caracol, lagoon-side Lamanai, and Altun Ha, just outside Belize City.

This Natural Selections Tours 8-day, 7-night birding tour is one of our lowest-priced and offers a rich introduction to birding Belize, while staying at just two lodges and follows the route from Belize City, to La Milpa Ecolodge and Research Center, Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and Bird's Eye View Lodge.

Our guide and tour leader along the way is Belizean birding guide Roni Martinez. Roni has 18+ years working as a guide, guide trainer, conservation officer, and force for bird conservation in Belize with the Belize Audubon Society, Belize Bird Conservancy, and numerous NGO's and birding tour groups.

Dates are Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 -perfect for a short, winter birding getaway- and rates are from $2,850.00 per-person double occupancy for a group of 6.

The essence of a good photograph as opposed to a picture is that is evokes emotion or tells a story. I try to do that and most of the truly good photographers I know do as well. Sometimes though, there is a moment or thing that causes us to do what we can, and then tell the rest of the story with words.

This was one of those times. I was in the New Jersey Pine Barrens crossing an area of cranberry bogs where I hadn't the slightest notion that I'd see any reptiles other than a King Snake, Water Snake, or maybe with luck, a Timber Rattlesnake. It was a wet area, and the idea that rat snakes would be here was as remote from my thoughts as could be. And then as often happens, I was stopped in my tracks by unexpected beauty.

This Black Rat Snake was stretched out in the sunset, very gravid and all kinked up as rat snakes do. I stopped, and by slowly moving closer inch by inch, was permitted by this snake to have my 100 mm lens not more than 10 inches away on a tripod. I stayed there easily 15 minutes and the snake never moved. Being so close on my belly on the ground, gave a unique opportunity to see myself reflected in the eye of this sentient being, on its terms, in its own world, and think about what it must have been thinking

In the end, I lifted myself and the snake never moved as I backed off and continued on.

During our Natural Selections Tours Ultimate Tiger Experience in India, we came across hundreds of Asian Green Bee-eaters flying, feeding and frolicking in just about every situation you can imagine. This one seemed almost intoxicated as it soaked up the morning sun along one of our early morning Tiger safaris.

Whale Sharks! August 2 to 6, 2024:

We’ve added the above dates to a 4 night Natural Selections Tours snorkeling trip to Mexico's Isla Mujeres, during the peak of Whale Shark season.

Underwater photographer and naturalist Matthew Sullivan leads this trip, which affords the most up-close and intimate exposure to these incredible animals possible, while maintaining a hands-off and respectable approach. Our private boat takes us during August’s new moon (the very best time) from Isla Mujeres to the midst of an unforgettable natural spectacle that can also include giant mantas, sea turtles, dolphins and more.

Whale Sharks and rays are commonly close enough to the surface to be just meters away and photographic opportunities are incredible by simply swimming calmly alongside and among these beautiful, gentle creatures.

Rates start at $2,614 per-person for a group of 6 and go down to $2,074 for a group of 9. Get yourself to Cancun and we'll do the rest!

While in India, our Natural Selections Tours group saw several species of Hornbill during our Ultimate Tiger Experience tour. During the Kaziranga National Park extension there were numerous Malabar Pied Hornbills, though most were far or flying. This male was part of a pair that we saw delightfully close as they explored a nest hole near our staging area for safari drives.

Rose-ringed Parakeets outside their nest in India's Kaziranga National Park. Our group got a surprise when we learned that our visit overlapped with a last minute visit by India's Prime Minister Modi. He had reserved the Central Range for himself one day, which had us visiting the Park's Agratoli or Eastern Range. That turned out to be a delight however as it was perhaps the birdiest part of our entire tour and after one visit to this zone, we all wanted more!

Two of the many dozens of Blackbuck Antelope we saw prior to our Natural Selections Tours Ultimate Tiger Experience, on the extension to India's Velavadar National Park. Our main target was Jungle Cat, and we saw many, but these beautiful and elegant animals were no less a blessing to see in the wild.

We've seen Blackbuck before in India, but never as close or as numerous as we did in Velavadar.

Blackbuck once ranged throughout the Indian subcontinent, but today are mainly confined to isolated, protected areas. They are considered extinct in Pakistan and Bangladesh and less than 200 still exist in Nepal.

During our Natural Selections Tours Kaziranga National Park extension in India, we came across Indian Elephants on every safari drive.

This was in the afternoon when we encountered a group of 8 or 10 Elephants having fun with water hyacinth by pulling it up and then flailing it about in the water to presumably knock the mud off before eating it. This parturient-looking female was never far from two other very young Elephants and it even seemed like the littlest one at least, was learning from her behavior.

This Malabar Pied Hornbill was seen on our Ultimate Tiger Experience photo tour, just before sunset in India’s Bandhavgarh National Park.

Wildlife photographers should always be on the lookout for a compelling silhouette image. They tend to add mystery and another conceptual dimension to a photograph. And, they tend to obscure the personality of the subject and cause the viewer to feel closer to the scene. Silhouettes are a way to make the observer feel they are part of the picture.

I’m not sure if the above applies to you, but it does for me. Silhouettes are also a great way to make the most out of lighting conditions that are otherwise, no bueno!

28/03/2024

Though our Ultimate Tiger Experience was a photo tour focused on Tigers, you can be sure we stopped for just about all the birds and wildlife we encountered along the way.

In this case, it would have been impossible not to stop! It was during the Kanha National Park of our Tour, and Lynn Hackett and Fred Hennig and I were in the same jeep when we passed this Hoopoe on the ground and feeding quite fearlessly close to the dirt road we were on.

Luck was with us and as we stopped, this gorgeous bird hopped up onto a bamboo stalk at pretty much eye level, perching there for what seemed like many minutes. Every few seconds it would swing its head side to side, essentially watching us watch it, as our cameras clicked out a staccato that must have resulted in hundreds of images.

Hoopoes do most of their feeding on the ground which explains that long, probing bill, and different species are distributed across Asia, Africa and Europe. A fun fact is that this exotic, regal, and beautiful bird is also seen time and again in ancient Egyptian art, where it was considered sacred.

About Natural Selections Tours

Natural Selections Tours was founded in 2019 by James Adams. James came to the decision to establish Natural Selections Tours, as he wanted to expand on sharing his passion and experiences with other bird watching and nature travelers.

Natural Selections Tours was born out of a love for the tropical nature of Central America. This has evolved in being able to offer birding and nature tours to this whole region and beyond. We would be very happy to help you to organize and design your bird watching, wildlife watching, or nature photography holiday whether it be in Honduras, Central America, South America, Asia, Africa or elsewhere. Over the decades, we have gathered and are eager to share our vast knowledge of the natural history and conservation of our beautiful Planet with you.
