Larval sea slug 💜 (📸: Ryo Minemizu) Dive into the underwater world of Pleurobranchaea – funky sea slugs with a captivating metamorphosis journey! During their larval stage, these little wonders switch up their dining styles like a buffet adventure: some feast on plankton, others sip yolk like smoothies, and a few fast-track to adulthood. Bedecked with cilia-lined Velum for fancy swimming moves, these larvae flaunt colors from see-through chic to bold and beautiful, reflecting their mood (or rather, species).

As they grow into adults, Pleurobranchaea continue to impress by breaking away from the typical gastropod "radula routine," a conveyor belt-like feeding mechanism. Instead, these sea slugs flaunt a flexible throat that they can turn inside out for a truly jaw-dropping dining flex! This snazzy trick helps them seize and savor prey, marking them as true marvels of the marine mollusk world!

How you can improve your underwater communications 👇👇

Place your unit on your tank strap at the six o'clock position (shown here). The further away from other equipment and the more it can be "pointed" toward the other transducer you're trying to communicate with either surface or diver, the better communication you'll have.

Line of sight is not necessarily required, especially with our higher-powered units; however, the fewer objects and distance between two units, the better communications you'll have.

The mantis shrimp! 📷: Greg Lecoeur These brightly colored crustaceans are thought to have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom, equipped with a color vision system four times more complex than our own. They have up to 16 photoreceptors and are capable of seeing UV, visible, and polarized light. Scientists inspired by the polarization element of their vision developed cameras utilizing this form of light to detect early stages of cancerous tissues that are invisible to the human eye!

These visually intriguing critters grow between 8 and 15 inches (20-38 cm). Some species can visually communicate by modulating fluorescence on their bodies.

With all of these attributes it is likely that vision is their dominant perceptual adaptation, but it's been found that they also communicate with sound through a low frequency rumble or purr. In the realm of human perceptions this isn’t Grammy material, but when pitch-shifted up an octave the call and response patterns become more apparent.

Important to note that listening to the shrimp is very different in the wild from listening to them in a tank. According to OCR pal and Biologist Erica Staaterman’s, the shrimps’ communications were, “so synchronized they sounded like a chorus.” Check out the the comments section to listen for yourself!

"Coral Spawning" by Tom Shlesinger won 3rd place in Ocean Art 2022 Marine Life Behavior category.

The Story: A branching coral spawns pinkish bundles of eggs and s***m. Corals are animals, and this is how they reproduce and create new generations of baby corals. Usually, at the exact same time, thousands of corals of a given species along hundreds of kilometers of the reef reproduce by spawning egg-and-s***m bundles altogether into the open sea. These bundles will be carried away by the currents, mixing in the water, until they finally encounter a match—a s***m will fertilize an egg and new life will be created. Yet catching coral spawning is tricky business as it usually happens only once a year in a certain month of the year, on a specific night of the month, and at a certain hour of the night for a very short time window of only a few minutes.

This image is part of an ongoing scientific-documentary project documenting the nightlife and unique reproductive phenomena of corals and other inhabitants of the coral reef in the Red Sea. I spent ~300 nights underwater in the last few years during the major reproduction season of corals and other reef-associated animals snorkeling and freediving for hours every night to document the nocturnal behavior and build a calendar of the reproduction of corals and other coral-reef dwellers.

"Coral Spawn" by Chris Gug Gug Underwater

Won 2nd Place in Ocean Art 2022 NEW Mobile Phone category

Chris Gug won a Freeway Longhaul 75 Carryall Duffel Bag courtesy of THINK TANK PHOTO

The Story: The dive manager/naturalist Sabine at Misool gave me an insider's tip the night before this photo was taken. While it's not well-documented or studied, she had witnessed a coral spawn event on this moon cycle in past years, and believed there was a chance that corals might spawn within the next day or three. So my wife & I sat out on the dock all night, skipping dinner, a presentation, and some sleep. But finally, a very fishy stanky smell filled the calm air. Looking down into the water below with the phone flashlight showed egg packets beginning to pop up to the surface. I slipped off the dock to document the event, but not knowing if we would have seconds, minutes, or hours, the phone that was already in my hand was the best camera for the job, which I feared might be over before I could even get in. But it did go on for quite a while - more than 30 minutes on two consecutive nights. The gametes formed a slick on the calm surface, and the smell was like opening unrefrigerated week-old fishy cheese, which seemed to cling to my body (and my wife's long, curly hair) for the next day. But what an incredible experience it was, watching the coral do it's thing, and the bounty that it provided the rest of the reef's inhabitants on that night from crabs filtering as much of a meal as possible, up to the black-tip sharks rapidly cruising through trying to take advantage of a smaller fish busy gorging themselves - I'll gladly get covered in that coral stank any time!
