Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Roatan...

To the community of Roatan, to all of our sponsors, to all of the many PEOPLE OF ACTION who make things like this happen... We thank you for turning out yesterday at Naviera Hybur Roatan - Hyde Shipping as we officially dedicated the three new emergency vehicles and turned them over to the Bomberos to put them in service... May they save many lives and help our community for many years to come...

This initiative was a team project between, the two Rotary clubs in collaboration with the Roatan Fire Service and partners throughout Alberta, Canada and Honduras. This project was approximately five years in development and as a result of the proper paperwork and coordination by the Roatan Fire Service, the vehicles were released from customs in just over a week of arriving on Roatan.

The project was led by both the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie, sunrise in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada and the Rotary Club of Roatan. The Rotary Clubs and the Roatan Fire Service would like to thank the following for their efforts and support in bringing this project to fruition for the island of Roatan and its communities:

The Fire Truck and the ambulances are now officially in service on Roatan and their duties will be divided between both the Dixon Cove and the Oakridge Fire Halls as required, and determined by Major Wilmer Guerrero.

This will give much needed relief to the fire fighters in both the Roatan and Santos Guardiola stations, who have been managing with only a single fire engine for the entire island for the past little while.

The paramedic ambulances are large and a welcome addition for the fire service. The interior of the units features a portable treatment room, with ample room to provide life-saving care on site at an emergency, or in transit to a medical facility.

Kimpton Grand is hosting the Roatan Food and Wine Festival in August, featuring culinary and drink sessions. Mauro Pellegrino and Sarah Harmacek are organizing the event, with Mauro overseeing the food and beverage and Sarah focusing on the beverage portion. They are working together to creatively pair food and drinks and ensure a smooth event. Sarah, a certified sommelier, is training the staff to be more knowledgeable about different wines and beverages. The festival will offer a variety of food and drink stations, including a whole cow roasted on the terrace. The event is open to the public and will take place on August 3rd from 5pm to 10pm.

How about a story of the day...

Six-year-old girl Helga Hiltunen from Finland wrote a letter to God before Christmas. She asked for 100 marks in the letter.

At that time, only the President of the Republic could open letters with an incorrect address in Finland.

Thus, the letter addressed to "God" was read by Urho Kaleva Kekonen, who successfully ruled the country from 1956 to 1982.

Kekonen decided to satisfy this request, but he thought that 50 marks would be enough for her. He ordered a car to be brought to him and decided to bring her money in person as well as an answer "from God".

Shortly afterwards, Helga's new letter arrived at the president's office. She wrote that the whole street was staring at Mr. President's car that stopped near her house. In the continuation of the letter, the girl asked "God" never to send money through the president again, because he stole exactly half of it!
