The Croatian poet Jakša Fiamengo said that fjaka is a specific state of mind and body. “It is like a faint unconsciousness,” he wrote, “a state beyond the self or – if you will – deeply inside the self, a special kind of general immobility, drowsiness and numbness, a weariness and indifference towards all important and ancillary needs, a lethargic stupor and general passivity on the journey to overall nothingness. The sense of time becomes lost, and its very inertness and languor give the impression of a lightweight instant. More precisely: it’s half somewhere and half nowhere, always somehow in between.”

Dear friends, thank you for sharing and being active in promoting our little homestay. July is already as good as fully booked, for August and September our calendars are still empty (let's hope for some last minute visitors) and from medio September I'm planning a special offer with yoga and stay. You know what?

I am proud. I am proud of us. Of this house.

I’m proud that we could buy it without the help of anyone. That we listened to our gut feelings. That we spent all our money on it that we set aside after selling our Amsterdam apartment. That we have no mortgage on it. That no bloody bank is profiting from us having this small piece of land and this million-dollar view.

I’m not proud of us because we succeeded in a capitalistic dream of owning a place to call our own. NO. I’m proud of us because we secured for ourselves fresh, healthy air, a quiet place, a daily swim in the most beautiful waters, the smell of pine trees daily, a lot of time together, a place where our families can come together and have holidays that they normally couldn’t afford, that we are free to make our days here, that we are physically busy in the garden, that we can lay down on our terrace and watch the stars, that our dog can run in the garden freely, that this house inspires us to be creative, that we don’t see it as a “property” but as a part of our family.

That we still learn patience by building slowly. That we are making mistakes. Learning.

That we have a garden so we could be free to adopt a stray turtle. That I can observe a bat and realize what a little ugly face it has while sleeping in the lamp on our covered terrace.

That on some days, I can stay quiet all day. That on some days we hear only raindrops and the sea.

I am proud of the sea. In our vicinity – the sea!

Proud that we sleep well. That we are not in the rat race. That our home is a healing place. That it gives us distance, a pause. That it slows down the time.

That we are able to design and reform the idea of tourism in the way we imagine it. That we can set up the rules to slow down and soften our visitors. That we can open their eyes to the beauty around us, help them appreciate it, and feel part of this heaven.

That we are proud of how this place is developing. That we are staying humble.
