Biokovo-Imotski Lakes Geopark officially becomes a UNESCO Global Geopark 🌏🌍🌎🇭🇷
After the Council of UNESCO Global Geoparks accepted the Biokovo-Imotski Lakes Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark last September, the final, official confirmation has arrived! At the session held from 13 to 27 March 2024, the UNESCO Executive Board officially proclaimed the Biokovo-Imotski Lakes Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
This decision by the UNESCO Executive Board has completed this story that began back in 2019, when the Biokovo-Imotski Lakes Geopark was established. It will now proudly bear the prestigious name of UNESCO Global Geopark.
UNESCO Geoparks are unique geographic areas of international geological significance that are managed using a holistic approach to protection, education and sustainable development. By raising awareness and educating about the important of geological heritage, the UNESCO geoparks give the local community a sense of pride and bolsters their identification with the area in which they live. Geological heritage associated with nature and cultural heritage improves the sustainable use of resources, mitigates the effects of climate change, and reduces risks associated with natural catastrophes.
Through their activities, UNESCO Geoparks attract a greater number of visitors, enabling a range of production and service activities to be implemented, which in turn contributes to the socioeconomic development of the community. Geoparks contribute not only with geological sights of interest, but also other ecological, archaeological, historical and cultural features. Geoparks support the local community, who actively participate in the geoparks, as they recognise and wish to promote their geological, historical and cultural heritage, primarily through geotourism.☘️
