ISLAND IŽ

Island Iž lies in the middle channel between Island Ugljan and Island Dugi otok. It is an island of fishermans, potters and olive tree growers. It is also one of the most beaitiful islands of the Zadar archipelago. It is overgrown with plantations of olive trees and tipical mediterranean vegetation. The coast is very diverse, full of untouched secluded bays, flat rocky beaches never touched by human hand, ideal for enjoying in cristal clear sea and sunbathing far away from overcrovded beaches. For those who want to hide away from the hot sun, there is abundance of pine forests, where they can find pleasant shadow. Island is an ideal starting-point for one-day boat trips, since it is surrounded by ten little islands and it is very close to the National park Kornati. Evening walks through »mountain« paths on the southern side of the island offer unforgettable sunset sights and beautiful views from the highest top Korinjak on archipelago of Zadar or even Kornati. Island was already inhabited in early medieval times. From that period there are preserved remains of 4 villages, church of Saint Mary from 9th century with semicircular apse and many others sights, which bear witness about the rich culture of the island. Gourmets will not be dissapointed, because the island offers great opportunity to try delicious Dalmatian food. Diversity of fresh sea food is trully exceptional and it is also possible to taste famous naturally pressed olive oil and home-made brandy.
