It's recommended to experience it for your heart and soul because there are the most attractive trails which are situated on curvy Istrian coastal area and are perfectly suitable for all cyclists who prefer to do recreation during their holiday.

Starting from the protected landscape of Cape Kamenjak in Premantura, all cyclists have the opportunity to discover Medulin, then there are Marčana and Rakalj situated in the eastern part of Istria and not to forget the biggest Istrian town of P**a. Lean more about the little fishermen village Fažana whose bicycle routes will take you through the beautiful coastline where you can enjoy the view of the Brijuni islands and its beautiful sunsets. Over 120 km of marked bike trails passing through olive groves situated in the town of Vodnjan make possible that all cyclists can do sightseeing which is not possible to do by the car.

Malvasia is a name shared by numerous varieties around Mediterranean, most notably Italy. However, so far there was no genetic identical discovered for the type of Malvasia found on Istrian Peninsula – Northernmost part of Croatian coastline. Malvasia is renowned for being able to produce a variety of styles of wine and because of excellent growing conditions on Istria combined with good practices of local winemakers through decades this variety has become a synonym for a “safe” choice when ordering white wine in Croatian restaurants.

Generally, Malvasia Istriana grapes are known as being of large berries that turn green-yellow or full golden in warmest locations. These are grapes of relatively high yield so good canopy and fruit management is important in the vineyards. Most wines made from this grape will fall in 11,5%-13,5% alcohol level bracket. First written account of Malvazija Istarska dates back to 1891 when it was described for a wine expo in Zagreb. It is speculated to have developed from another Malvasia brought to Istrian Peninsula during the Venetian rule.

Range of styles of Istrian Malvasia are found on local menus and in local Croatian shops from light and fruity/floral ones all the way to sweet wines or orange wines. Seeing how wine consumption in Croatia spikes over the summer when many international guests visit hot coastal regions of the country, fresh and fruity expressions seem to be the most popular. These wines will usually exhibit aromas of stone fruity like peach or apricot, usually with floral aspect, acacia blossom being the most common one. Often there will be some mineral and/or almond notes to your Malvasia wines as well.

Many of Malvazija Istarska wines will be a perfect pairing for various seafood dishes, grilled fish fillets, fresh oysters, chicken salads, risottos and pastas. With a strong Italian influence in Istrian cuisine, you will never go wrong ordering this wine while visiting this region known for delicious pastas 🥂

Teran is a red grape variety that has been cultivated for centuries in Istria (Croatia), Friuli (Italy), and the Kras Plateau in Slovenia. The history and the usage of the name Teran have long been disputed between Croatia and Slovenia, and even though Slovenia registered the name as a Protected Designation of Origin, their Teran wines are mainly produced from a separate variety named Refošk.

The dispute was partially settled by the European Union when Croatia was allowed to use the name, but the wine has to be labeled as Teran – Croatian Istria (Hrvatska Istra). Slovenia later filed a lawsuit against the European Commission and this decision, but in 2020, The General Court of the EU supported the previous ruling and rejected Slovenian claims.

To add to the confusion, Refošk and Teran grapes have long been mistakenly regarded as the same variety, but recent findings show that they merely belong to the same family (Refosco). Varietal Istrian Teran is typically fresh and fruity with well-balanced acidity, firm tannins, and typical notes of berries and spices.

It is usually enjoyed young and pairs well with charcuterie, cheese, and game 🍷
