Without doubt close to the top of the list of impressive Old Towns in Dalmacija and Europe, Stari Grad was founded by the Greeks in 384 BC, although the area is known to have been settled by Illyrian tribes much earlier.

In the following two millennia Greeks were followed by Romans, Slavs, Venetians, Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians either by conquest or nominal rule.

The 20 century saw transition from the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes, Yugoslavia and finally, in 1991, to the Republic of Croatia within the county of Splitsko-Dalmatinska.

Pitve Tunnel, Hvar
Loved driving this route from Jelsa to Plaža Petarčica which enables quick access from the north to the south of Hvar island. There are nice views along the route on both sides of the tunnel. The tunnel itself is 1.5 Kms long and is one way only, controlled by traffic lights at both ends. It is fine with a car but can imagine it being quite scary in a large vehicle e.g camper van. There are width and height restrictions so check carefully before using this route if you are driving something larger. Hajduk badge at approach from south side was a bonus!
