When in Venice, be sure to see the Portrait of the Four Tetrarchs, because one of them is our Diocletian, the founding father of Split.
The tetrarchy was the system instituted by Diocletian in 293 AD to govern the ancient Roman Empire by dividing it between four emperors.
The portrait  symbolizes the concept of the tetrarchy, rather than providing four personal portraits. Each tetrarch looks the same, without any individualized characteristics, except that two, probably representing the older augusti, have beards, and two do not who might have symbolized the Caesars. The sculpture was originally placed on a square in Constantinopol around 300 AD, and then it was stolen around 1204 and brought to Venice.
On the third photo you can see the famous church Santa Maria Della Salute, another example of things that the Venetians took (stole) without asking, but this time from Split! Not the whole church ofc, but the building stones to build the church were taken from our Palace in Split.

Medicinal plants anyone?

Dalmatia is home to many wild plants that are very good for your health, and we love to pick them during our long walks in the wilderness.

Sage (photo number 4) is one of the favorites.  Her Latin name (salvia) comes from the word salvus, meaning safe, alive or unharmed. An Old Roman proverb goes..."if death threatens, go get the sage".

The original Jewish ghetto in Split which was found in the early XVIII. century. Due to pressure from Pope and Rome it was kept closed during the nights from 1778. till 1807.. The French forces then destroyed all the doors and gates that kept the Jews in their ghetto closed off.

While in Split be sure to try the most famous local soda drink-P**i!
It's called P**i and it is yellow but don't be freightned :)
It's named after the famous P**i Longstocking. The story goes that one copy of this drink was sent to the author of P**i, Astrid Lindgren, in the early seventees, who liked the beverage so much that she allowed the use of the name, without charging the makers of the drink anything.

Split has been an interesting destination for world travelers for a very long time now. On this photo from 1929. we can see the famous Irish playwright, critic, political activist and Nobel prize winner George Bernard Shaw taking a stroll on our Peristyle. In Split he stayed for three days, saying later in a mail to a female friend who lived in Ljubljana: "If only Yugoslavia was not so far away from my home, I would spend a lot of my time here. I'm not suprised that you picked this country for your home".

Picture from 1873. of Marjan when it was without it's pine "coat" and still pretty bare. First forestation began in 1852., and only a bit around the old Jewish cemetery. First complete forestations came only in the 20s and 30s in the century to come.
