Total Split

Total Split Split is booming. With EU entry in July 2013 and airlines increasing flights for the 2014 season, it is clear that the city is set for a bumper 2014 and beyond.

Once better known as the G*teway to the Islands, tourists are now discovering the magic of the city which is rich in history, heritage, culture, gastronomy, sport... and fun! While there are several sites with tourist information about Split, there are none in English which bring the city to life, updated daily covering all topics from Dalmatian vegetarian recipes and Split nightlife to the latest

sporting action and holiday offers. Part of the Total Hvar project (http://www.total-hvar.com and http://www.total-inland-dalmatia.com), we aim to provide the best and most current information about Split written in a lively manner in the most important language for tourists, English.

A new top-end addition to tourism in Split with probably the best view of any hotel I have stayed in in this region. The superbly located 5-star Hotel Ambasador Split opened its doors a few months ago and is preparing for what should be a magnificent season. It was great to catch up with General Manager Stipe Medić recently, who was kind enough to give me this interview.

I have stayed in many hotels on the Croatian coast over the years, but none with a view quite like the new 5-star Hotel Ambasador in Split. Learn more about that and this fabulous new addition to Croatian tourism by meeting Hotel Ambasador General Manager, Stipe Medic.

Where will you be to welcome Croatia into Schengen and the Euro zone? Looking to spend the last of your kunas in style? A 5-star waterfront experience at the recently opened Ambasador Split gala dinner perhaps?

Croatia's entry to the Euro and the Schengen Zone is just around the corner, as an exciting 2023 beckons. Why not celebrate with a gala dinner at Split's new luxurious adress at Hotel Ambasador?

Finally! The battle with Croatian bureaucracy (at least the first round) has been won, and 'Croatia, a Survival Kit for Foreigners' has been printed locally and is now available in bookstores in Croatia.
Co-Author Paul Bradbury and Lauren Simmonds will be presenting their new book for the first time at the Discover Croatia store on Narodni Trg in Diocletian's Palace between 18:30 and 19:30 on Sunday November 20.

Signed and unsigned copies will be available on the night with a 10% discount off the RRP of 129 kuna.
After the signing at 19:30, we will retire to Paradiso Bar (Kamila Tončića 4) for drinks and more drinks until falling over time, if anyone wants to join.

The book will also be available for sale in the pub afterwards but with credit cards ONLY (Croatian bureaucracy round 2). All welcome and thank you to all who have helped us get the book over the line.

If you are planning on coming, please click 'going' so that we have an idea of numbers. If you are coming for the drinks afterwards, please like this post with a heart, so that we can plan numbers with the pub. See you there!

If you can't make it, the book will be available in Hocu Knjigu stores (you can already order online https://www.hocuknjigu.hr/.../croatia-a-survival-kit-for...) next week, as well as other stores around the country soonafter.

A little-known, affordable, and rather useful internal flight service returns on Thursday.

October 10, 2022 - After months of delay, the Trade Air PSO (Public Service Obligation) flights will finally begin on Thursday, a little-known - and rather useful - way to get around Croatia.  Last March, I took my first internal flight in Croatia that was not Croatia Airlines or a seaplane (ah...

Whisper it quietly but more and more people in the diaspora are returning to the Homeland to try their luck. And succeeding. Are you one of them, and willing to tell your story? New series on TCN, looking at the experiences - good and bad - of those who decided to return, with the aim of painting a more realistic picture for those who are considering the move. If you would like your returnee story - positive or negative - to be featured, please contact [email protected] Subject Returnee. Here is the first story - Toni who moved from Derby in the UK back to Split.

Whisper it quietly, but more and more people are relocating to Croatia from the diaspora. In a new TCN series, we meet them to find out how they are faring, and what advice they have for others thinking of making the switch. We start with Toni Bakovic, who moved from Derby to Split.

Split is the place to be September 20-25 for Slomadism 2022, a really great programme from the award-winning Saltwater Nomads team, after award-winning digital nomad events in Zagreb and Dubrovnik, as well as Zadar Digital Nomad Week. Looking forward to hanging out on bean bags with the cool people on the Saturday. Who else will be bringing their Speedos and joining me for the Picigin masterclass workshop?

September 10, 2022 - Split in September just got better; a chance to network on the beach and enjoy the laidback Mediterranean lifestyle. Meet Slomadism.   I have been writing about the digital nomad opportunity in Croatia for over 3 years now, and I am learning certain truths about the sc...

Reaction to my first video last week was insane. It was featured in the national media in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia, with more than 40,000 views and over 300 new subscribers, with 99% very positive comments (rare for me) - THANK YOU!

We are now just 22 subscribers away from the 1,000 mark, which will allow us to start to monetise the channel. So if you haven't already, you know what to do...

This week's video is also on language, but on a totally different
topic. Let me know what you think.

I can speak languages - French, German, and Russian with relative fluency in years gone by - and my Croatian (with a terrible accent) is good enough for television interviews. Unlike many foreigners, I find Croatian to be a very logical language with few exceptions. But it is the first language I stopped trying to learn - for a totally different reason.

If you like the video or want to learn more about life as a foreigner in Croatia, the please subscribe - I will be uploading 1-2 episodes a week for the foreseeable future. Coming soon - 10 Things I Never Expected to Find on Hvar, Explaining the Magic of Dalmatia to Foreigners in 1 Sentence, and The Vukovar Card, a New Deal for Eastern Croatia.

If you would like to pre-order a copy of Croatia, a Survival Kit for Foreigners, which will be published in time for Christmas, please email [email protected] Subject 20 Years YT. Napoleon Bonaparte

No wonder the French gave up in Dalmatia so quickly... Delighted to welcome Marko Loncar to TCN. Marko will be giving us a bit of a historical perspective, starting with a look at the French Administration of Split at the turn of the 19th Century. Welcome, Number 177!

If you would like to be TCN 178, and write about the Croatia where you are - here or in the diaspora, please send an initial piece for consideration to [email protected] Subject 178.

Although I am a fat blogger with a good face for radio, more and more people have been pushing me to get into video. After being initially reluctant to do so, I have decided to seize the day and all that, and I will be launching a YouTube channel called 20 Years an Expat in Croatia next month. This will be a mixture of my journey, my take on destinations and topics, opinions, a few clickbaity topics to get the conversation going, and ultimately some sponsored videos if the channel ever takes off.

Here is my first toe in the water, so be gentle (and feel free to subscribe - i think that is the phrase to use). I am finding my feet so VERY interested in constructive criticism. Many thanks to the 30 or so of you from all walks of my life who gave input into the draft video. Most of your concerns have been dealt with.

Please also let me know what you think of the content and format, and what kind of videos (if any you would like us to make). Finally a huge thanks to Igor Vuk of Wolf Media for producing the video. I only popped round for a beer to discuss some ideas, and we ended up filming 17 episodes in one evening. Here is the first, my 5 favourite words in Croatian (and they are not what you think). Be gentle...

He is the man who brought the wine bar to Split, 5-star mindful luxury to Hvar, and a host of other positive initiatives to Dalmatia and Croatian tourism. Very grateful to Zoran Pejović for this interview on his thoughts on the direction of Split tourism, including a look back to 2012 when our mutual interest in Split tourism began. Am also very grateful for Zoran's input in the ongoing TCN Split Winter Tourism Roundtable.

Continuing our look at how to improve tourism in Split, one of the city's tourism pioneers, Hotel Development Specialist and Expert Tourism Consultant Zoran Pejovic of Paradox Hospitality, offers his thoughts.

Another interesting angle on the direction of Split tourism. Very grateful to the legendary Joe Basic , who brought the Ultra Europe Festival to Croatia, for his thoughts on how Ultra promoted Split and changed the destination, what the main issues are with today's problems, and some very sensible (and quick win) advice on how to fix to them.

Last week's TCN editorial, Is Split Tourism 'Strategy' Killing the Goose with the Golden Eggs? caused a lot of discussion. Now listen to the viewpoint of one very switched on stakeholder, Ultra Europe founder, Joe Basic.

Diocletian's Palace in Split is changing, and sadly not for the better. But there is one corner of the palace which is timeless and seemingly impervious to change. One of the nicest impromptu experiences of my 20 years in Croatia happened there a few months ago, when I was waiting for a friend and then this happened. Dalmatia at its finest.

So much of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian's Palace in Split has changed in the last 20 years, but one corner of the palace is impervious to tim...

It may surprise some to read this, but Google thinks it is quicker and shorter to get from Split to Dubrovnik via the Neum Corridor in Bosnia and Hercegovina than the new Peljesac Bridge. A little on the variables in play, and why Neum very much has a future even after the welcome arrival of the bridge. Which route will you take next time?

After the euphoria of the opening of the Peljesac Bridge subsides, an intriguing look at the quickest way from Split to Dubrovnik.

Planning a road trip from Split? Korcula just got a lot closer with the new bridge. This is how it looks and this is how long it takes.

While most of the Peljesac Bridge commentary has been focused on connecting Dubrovnik, access to the islands of Korcula and Mljet have just improved considerably. TCN road tests the new drive from Korcula to Split.
