The second longest defensive walls in the world after the Great Wall of China is built to protect the oldest saltworks in the world in Ston, which are still in use today.

Ston saltworks are dating back to the Roman times, some two thousand years B.C. However, the Ston walls were built only in the 14th century, after the Republic of Dubrovnik took over Pelješac in 1334.
