Sumpetar in Croatia (Middle Dalmatia) is a small tourist village situated on the western border of Omis Riviera. From Sumpetar you can easily reach Omis and Split (20 kilometers to the west), either using many local buses or by car. Sumpetar has a nice small port where there are many old wooden newly renovated sailing ships which are now used primarily for tourism, and in the past were mainly used
as merchant and cargo ships. Sumpetar and nearby area of Krilo Jesenice have very long tradition of sailing and ship building which is preserved even until today - making this area the center of the biggest tourist sailing fleet in Adriatic. You will not find yachts and similar modern ships here, only old wooden sailing ships renovated to provide luxury and unforgettable experience of the Adriatic sea. Truth be told, in several past years some shipowners have turned to a new trend in sailing and cruising, which are small luxury cruisers (25 - 40 meters), made primarily out of steel. Sumpetar lies in as small bay, protested from northern Bura winds. There are several pebble beaches in Sumpetar, few coffee bars and three restaurants/konobas. Two grocery stores offer all necessary things you will need during your stay, and for bigger offer you will have to drive to nearby Omis or Split. Due to the vicinity of the towns of Omis, Split and Makarska, the visitors may enjoy numerous active holidays options such as rafting, free climbing, windsurfing or check out the nightlife of these dynamic tourist centers. Above Sumpetar, below the towering mountains, you will find ancient sites like churches, cemeteries, old villages of Zeljovici and Krug which are witnesses of thousand years long history of Croatian people in this area, which make Sumpetar one of most important parts of Croatian History. Once part of ancient Poljicka Republic, some even say that this is the are where Croatians first came to the sea, 14 centuries ago. Olive plantations, beautiful nature and astonishing view of the island Brac and Omis riviera are the reasons why most of tourists visit these old part of Sumpetar, even during the summer heat. Even during the hottest days it is possible to find refreshment in local restaurant/konoba in the village of Krug, where you can try locally grown food and beverages, and some of the most renowned local specialties.
