Exciting news!! 🌊🌊🌊We are entering a peak of calving season for our bottlenose dolphins, which means a lot of newborn babies. Last week our Dolphin watching team had a sighting with the first newborn babies of 2024. The newborns can be recognised by their small size compared to the mother and foetal stripes which they lose 3 to 4 weeks after birth. Fingers crossed we see many more of them this summer.🐬🐬🐬

The Dolphin Watching season this year was quite long thanks to the great weather we had in October, but now our team and the boat need the well-deserved rest and to prepare for the next summer. On a recent dolphin watching tour we got to see "Spyhopping."
So, what is spyhopping?🤔
Spyhopping is when a dolphin makes a controlled vertical rise out of the sea while treading water with its flippers. This behavior is most common when boats are close by and the dolphins want to get a better look and gather more information.
We can also just say that the dolphins are very curious of their surroundings😆😆😆

Recently a tour witnessed dolphins fighting.
Bottlenose dolphins are known to fight and compete with one another in order to show dominance and strength. This is also one of the ways that dolphins get scars on their dorsal fin and body.
*Fun fact: Our researchers distinguish between dolphins using the scars and markings found on the dorsal fin. 🐬🐬🐬
