Did you know why Split is called Split?

While some might joke that Split is named after the Banana Split or split personalities, the real story is a bit more romantic. The name Split is believed to come from the ancient Greek word Aspalathos, which referred to a yellow flower, the spiny broom, that blooms in the area every spring. 🌼

Greek settlers, admiring the carpets of yellow flowers on the hills surrounding the bay, likely named the settlement after this plant. Over time, the name evolved into Spalatum, Spalato, and finally, in 1909, it officially became Split, which it remains today.

INTERESTING CROATIAN PHRASES 💡

While the world knows the English tradition of afternoon tea with small sandwiches or biscuits, in Dalmatia, we have our own sacred ritual: MARENDA! It’s a mid-morning (or afternoon) snack, but don’t be fooled - it’s much more than just food.

Marenda is the ultimate blend of food, drink, and socializing, and it's an essential part of any Croatian's day. In fact, it’s almost a sacred ceremony, especially at work! It’s not just about a quick bite; it’s an opportunity to unwind and connect. Often, marenda may start with a small bite to eat but can quickly turn into a leisurely affair, sometimes even with a glass of good wine in hand. 🍷

Traditionally served between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., marenda usually features simple, home-cooked dishes made from authentic recipes that are both tasty and affordable.

And now... we’ve run out of time to write any more - we’ve got to start thinking about tomorrow’s marenda instead!

Did you know that Croatia has the cleanest sea in Europe? 🌊

According to the official analysis and report by the European Commission and the European Environment Agency in July 2024, Croatia has been confirmed to have 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞! An impressive 99.1% of Croatia's coastal areas (886 out of 894 tested) received excellent ratings for water quality. The study included 27 EU member states, Switzerland, and Albania, with Croatia ranking first, followed by Greece, Cyprus, and Austria.

Despite being a small country with fewer than 4 million people, Croatia offers countless beaches, coves, and bays that you’ll regret not exploring!
